Overnight Parking Restrictions in Vaughan Need to Change!

Residents in most of Toronto can park on their streets overnight, ALL YEAR ROUND. The  “FORMER” City of Vaughan by-law 4(7)(b) , OUTLAWS parking on "highways" from 2-6 am.

This by-law was originally enacted to allow snow ploughs in Vaughan to clear the streets specifically between 2 and 6 am.

The city’s new online visitor parking permit system is up and running but it's not enough. The new system was introduced after complaints from residents in many of the city’s newer subdivisions that their driveways can barely accommodate two cars, leaving nowhere for overnight guests to park other than the street.

Either,

a) have a seasonal signage solution so that it doesn't eliminate our parking all year round,

b) provide permanent residents with a set number of tangible display passes,

c) implement a new classification or definition for roads in rural areas that are not high traffic areas, which follow their own set of by-laws, or

d) eliminate the by-law all together

If you live in the former City of Vaughan, or areas like the new Kleinburg subdivision, where the homes are tightly packed and parking is limited, you know how frustrating it is to remember on a nightly basis to bring your car around and park it on whatever strip of space you have available in your parking lane outside your garage. If you fall asleep on the couch it's a 50 dollar ticket. If you park in the laneway too far from your garage it's a fire route infraction of 200 dollars. There needs to be something done about what roads are defined as "highways", the term is too broad.

This by-law is discriminatory, creates difficulties in many situations, is onerous for those affected and is really unpopular. The roads within subdivision are NOT high traffic areas and should NOT be treated as such.
