Vaping by children and young people under 18 has not been banned by the UK Government.

The Issue

This text was completely revised on 11/05/24 to encourage more people to support this petition.

This petition was launched by Max Cruickshank, a retired Youth Worker, with over 40 years experience of successfully providing drugs education and support, to young people with addictions in Scotland.

This petition is about completely banning Disposable Single-use Vapes, which are mainly used by children and young people under 18.

Why is this a problem?

In the last twenty years we have successfully reduced child smoking to almost zero in the U.K.

Vaping has taken over from smoking in children under 18.

Now 11 to 17-year-olds are vaping,  in June 2022 there was 7.7% of them vaping. By June 2023 11.6% of children were vaping, and now in May 2024 that is figure is heading for 20% of children and young people vaping.

Children are not adults, their bodies and brains are smaller, more fragile and more likely to be damaged by the nicotine and other substances in vaping. Their lungs are smaller, so they breath much faster than adults. When children load their lungs with the aerosols, that deliver the nicotine, it goes deeper, and faster into their lungs, than for fully grown adults.

The vaping industry is using our children as NICOTINE MULES, to addict a new generation to nicotine, for profit Disposable vapes only became available in 2019. Only now in 2024 do we have the evidence that the many flavourings in these vapes are toxic. This is because the flavourings used in baking and food production is the same as is used in disposable vapes. It is now know that when these flavouring are heated to the high temperatures required to create the aerosols in vapes, they become highly toxic.

Disposable Single-use Vapes have no medicinal purpose, they are not recommended as a way to quit smoking and cannot legally be bought by anyone under 18.

By simply banning Disposable-Single use Vapes, our governments could immediately stop the addiction of children to nicotine, and the massive environmental pollution.

Delays I banning disposable single-use vapes is leading to hundreds of thousands of children and young people becoming addicted to nicotine.

There are no plans in place to supported children already addicted to nicotine to safely to quit, their nicotine addiction.

Environmental damage from vaping.

When this petition started, in June 2023, 1.3 million hard to recycle, vapes were being dumped in our environment each week, in the UK. Now over 5 million are dumped every week.
