Vans(South Africa) should start recognizing Black South African Creatives
The Issue
The problem that i would like to solve is quiet straight forward since its something that is happening all over the world. RACIAL INJUSTICE is the PROBLEM.
What is Racial justice? Racial justice is the systemic fair treatment of people of all races, resulting in equitable opportunities and outcomes for all. Racial equality goes beyond "anti-racism". its not just the absence of discrimination and inequities, but also the presence of deliberate systems and supports to achieve and sustain racial equity through proactive and preventative measures.
My name is Muimeleli P Ramashidzha better known as Paul Shellington. I am one of the Black South Africans creatives/artists who are facing racial injustice with Brands. I wont focus on all famous brands in South Africa but i will just focus on the Brand that i wear the most and love the most, Vans. Vans is one of the top shoe/clothing brands in SA, and its one shoe that most youths, artists, kids, skaters, old people prefer. lets be honest everyone loves the brand and almost everyone can afford the brand.
A few months ago Vans South Africa had a pledge to support the Black lives Matter movement which was happening all over the world, cool right? but to be honest i say its not cool, Vans South Africa is just putting on a front and i am saying this from my artist point of view. Before i started photography(2017) i was a skater from 2012 until 2015 and that was when i started wearing Vans and i fell in love with the shoe ever since.
By EVER SINCE i mean that i've been doing everything that is Vans related, entering vans competition, buying the ltd editions,HOV Johannesburg, wearing the brand ever since until to a point where i thought i should follow the page @Vans_za on Instagram because i was obsessed with the Brand. I know every Black South African/African creative, artist who read till this paragraph will nod with me.
Luckily Vans did follow me back on the 10th of December 2019 so it was easier for me to communicate with them. I did give them my proposal and the person who is handling the (@Vans_za) gave me an email address that i should use if i had anything i wanted to talk about with Vans South Africa( info@vansza.co.za) and they said its for the marketing department. Well unluckily Gmail said the email is invalid.
Vans South Africa just go around telling people that they are behind the Black lives Matter movement yet they are doing nothing to recognize local. To be honest there's a lot of African creatives doing greater things and those artists are a huge fan of Vans but the Brand wont do nothing about it, when i sent them a Direct Message on Instagram asking why they never re-post the things that i post on my stories because i ALWAYS ALWAYS tag them, they just said "its due to many reasons. so many i wont list them".
i honestly believe one of the reasons why Vans South Africa wont re-post the things i post is because i am BLACK. I follow their page day in and day out and i swear the only thing they post or re-post is anything that is posted by a white person. Vans South Africa barely post a black person or something that was created by an African on their page or stories and trust me its a lot of us Black Africans tagging Vans everyday because we are doing the most but i swear they wont do anything about it.
Please sign this petition if you believe that famous brands like Vans South Africa should start noticing African creatives, Vans South Africa has a lot of Racial injustice, lets not turn a blind eye. Asiyenzeni something bafethu please.
