Save Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School

In 2010, Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School, located in the heart of Vancouver's Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood was one of five Elementary schools on the verge of closure.

Now in 2016, the Vancouver School Board has placed Sir Guy Carleton Elementary School on its shortlist for possible closure as a direct result of the Provincial government's chronic underfunding of public education.

The VSB has identified that students and staff currently located within the yellow frame building (built in 1910) will be moved into the brick building for the 2016-17 school year. The Yellow Frame Building will be locked up and not used for school purposes. This is to help the district reach it's unrealistic goal of having schools at 95% capacity. The VSB’s 2016-17 Operating Budget identified the need to close a number of classroom spaces within operating schools for the 2016-17 school year. A target of a $140, 000 reduction was identified in budget. In short, the VSB has closed the historic frame building to save money on the maintenance the building requires.

No elementary school of Carleton’s size has ever been closed in B.C. For over 114 years, the school has served our community—through depressions, recessions, and world wars—and there have always been sufficient resources for it to operate. We've saved Carleton before and we'll save it again. There is no such thing as pinching pennies for our future generations.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
