Barry Island Parking

The Issue

  • Out of season high parking charges
  • Disabled parking on Friars Road
  • Lack of Residential and permit parking
  • Unsafe/no lighting in Carpark after dark
  • Effecting Local Businesses and tourist industry

The charges for out of season use are far to high. There should be no charges between the months of Nov-Feb (Winter times) when it is mostly dog walkers and people wanting to nip into a small local business. Although the Council have introduced a Coastal Permit this then leads to the unsafe carparking issues.

We are all glad there are more disabled parking to help those who are unable to walk far, however the amount of disabled bays along Friars Road is too much. There are also more disabled bays which has taken over the Emergency Services Parking Bays and also the Taxi Waiting Bays on Paget Road, not to mention the first 2 bays in the top carpark are disabled only along with more in the other carparks. Not everyone who has difficulties has a disabled badge.

There are a number of flats on Friars Road and Paget Road with no official parking permit bay. Therefore the number of parking tickets these residents have incurred due to waiting to park or parking on a curb is madness. The residents along the rest of the Island are only allowed 2 permits per household. This is just simply not right and is unfair on anyone who owns/lives in a property on the island. One resident was told that if they were to have a party with their family members, the family members should pay for parking in the carpark and walk up to their house!

Dangerous unsafe parking in carpark for residents, visitors and shop owners. With no lighting, no CCTV, groups of boys on bikes, and youths in cars speeding back and forth showing of their cars.

All of the above are also effecting the small local businesses. These were raised by local businesses in 2019 of the effects it could have on local business. It seems the local council want these businesses and this industry to dissapear. Many complaints have been aired from local residents, business' and tourists on a daily basis.
