Sama is the northmost suburb of Vadodara city, this area is strategically located between the two roads leading to Ahmedabad, the state highway and the expressway. Sama together with Channi TP13 and Nizampura has a population of 3 lakhs, whereas Harni has an estimated population of 1 lakh. While reaching these Ahmedabad exit points is easy for Sama-Nizampura-Channi resident, it is very tedious for the numerous people staying in these areas to reach the industrial areas of Halol, as there is no direct access to the Golden Chowdi or the airport in Harni area or the RTO office for driving license application. The reason is the delay of over 6 years in starting of the Viswamitri river bridge to link the two adjacent areas of Sama and Harni. While the two suburbs are located side by side, the development of Harni has been very slow due to delay in opening of the Sama-Harni link road, interestingly the Vadodara airport is located in the Harni area, the development of the airport itself is also very slow. The city has only 8 flights daily, with closer of Jet Airways, the government has taken no steps to allow other airlines like Vistara, SpiceJet and GoAir etc, to start services from this industrial city, where thousands of people visit daily from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Indore etc. There is a demand to convert Vadodara into International airport, which seems to be a far cry.

Vadodara is the same constituency from which PM Modi had contested the Lok Sabha election in 2014 alongwith Varanasi, he comfortably won both the seats with huge margin. Vadodara is always considered a safe seat for BJP, PM Modi chose to retain the Varanasi seat and relinquish the Vadodara after promising the people of Vadodara that he will make all efforts to develop this neglected third largest city of Gujarat, after Ahmedabad and Surat. He could successfully develop the tallest status of the world at 100 kms from Vadodara and inaugurate several bridges in states such as Assam and Himachal Pradesh with difficult mountainous terrain. However looks like he is also helpless in the case of an ill-fated bridge on river Vishwamitri. This bridge is less than 100 metres in length, the work on this was started in June 2013, almost an year before 2014 general elections, and while the 2019 general elections have been completed electing PM Modi for the second term, this bridge is still not completed and open for people. The irony is people have to travel six kilometers to travel between Sama and Harni which are only one kilometer apart, this is resulting loss of 1 hour daily in travelling time and extra fuel costing more money. Apart from the airport, the Harni region has several schools, hundreds of kids have to travel 9 to 10 kms zig zag roads untarred in unsafe school vans to commute between their homes and schools, if the bridge is opened for use the straight road could cut short their travel time by one third and also save money for their parents.

The Vadodara Municipal Corporation should end the plight of the people living in these northern suburbs of the city. It should urgently start work of widening the bridge on narmada canal on Sama-Savli road, which has become congested, and also make two bridges on both sides of the canal on Vishwamitri river, similarly it should widen the bridge on narmada canal on Harni-Dena road. This will enable the people from newly developed areas of Vemali, Sama-Savli road, to go to Golden chowdi, or quickly reach the Harni airport. These projects should have been completed 5 years back, now that PM Modi is again elected, there is steady BJP government in both Centre and State, the VMC should work to improve the road and bridge network in the Harni and Sama area of Vadodara city.
