Why this petition matters

Started by Angie Gardner

Jacob Aquino (#1148698), has been incarcerated within the VADOC (Virginia department of corrections) since 1999, serving a 36 year prison sentence for an armed robbery conviction. Jacob has served 23 years of that 36 year sentence. He's missed the entire life of his (now 27 year old) daughter. Never met his 2 grandsons. Has suffered the loss of both his mother, and father. Lost several family member's. And has basically missed and lost every key moment with his family and the people who love him, all while being incarcerated. Jacob himself, admits, and takes responsibility for his actions, wrongdoing, and drug use, as a teenager. It was exactly that road that lead him to where he is now. He also accepts, and admits that in the beginning of serving his 36 year sentence, he felt hopeless, and helpless, knowing that he had no chance of parole or a sentence reduction, and that lead him to poor institutional adjustment, institutional violations and infractions, and even more drug use. He had basically given up on life, and hope. Thanks to the Fishback law, Jacob actually became parole eligible in 2020. He went up for his 1st review, that December, and was denied parole, understandably, due to his past institutional history. The entire year of 2021, Jacob worked hard to do everything,  and more, that was advised by the parole board. With the exception of completing programs (due to unavailability during Covid), he has maintained a job, stayed charge and infraction free, rebuilt relationships with his family and loved one's, utilized his down time reading and educating himself so that he can be a productive member of society, a provider, a mentor, a father, a brother, a friend, and hopefully a second chance being a free man. Unfortunately, he went up for parole, again, in December 2021, and got caught in the middle of an election year, and political circus. He wasn't even given his answer, from the parole board until the end of April 2022. We went in front of the board again in November of 2022, and again denied parole, the week of Christmas. Although it seems discouraging, and nearly impossible to be granted parole, Jacob refuses to give up. Jacob went into the system, an angry, addicted, uneducated, immature teenager. But he has become a remorseful, caring, kindhearted, loving, educated, compassionate, hard working, dedicated, self aware, and absolutely amazing man. He has so much more to offer this world and his family, than he will ever be allowed to give, as inmate #1148698. All we are asking is that he is given the chance to prove that, to everyone, FREE, and in society of the outside world. Almost everyone deserves a second chance, and I assure you that Jacob Daniel Aquino is one of the people who deserve it most. Thank you for taking the time to read, and watch this video.
