Change the way the VA Board of Veterinarians Review cases.

The Issue

I took my healthy kitten in for a routine spay.
Her surgery ended at 1130 AM
At 2:30 PM I was told her surgery went well and she was waking up fine.
At 4:40 PM the vet notes that Molly Mittens is non responsive in her cage.
The vet did not call me and give me an option of taking her to an overnight vet.
Instead the vet turned the lights off, left Molly Mittens all alone and in the morning she was dead.
I filed a complaint with the Board of Veterinarian Medicine in VA and they found no violation of the standard of care.
The Board refuses to tell me when it is OK to leave a non responsive kitten all alone to die in the dark and not call the owner and let the owner make an informed decision.

The way the complaint process goes.

I file a complaint.  The vets are allowed to see my complaint.  The vets respond but I am not allowed to see their response too my complaint against them. The investigator does an investigation, but I am not allowed to see the report by the investigator.  From information that the board gave me, I know there was at least 1 false fact reported.  I had gotten an opinoin from a second vet prior to filing my complaint.  The investigator said that I told her she could not contact that vet.  When in fact, the only reason I contacted the 2nd vet was for the Board to have an independent opinoin.

The Board told me one of the reasons, that the care for Molly was OK is that animals react differently to anesthesia.  So the vet knowing and saying Molly was non responsive and doing nothing is because Molly was reacting badly to anesthesia.  I thuoght that was why we paid vets, to recognize a problem and treat that problem.

In VA, vets can be sanctioned for violating a reasonable standard of care.  The Board found no violation in Molly Mittens case therefore, it is OK for a vet in VA to see that an animal is non responsive and to do nothing.  Not even a phone call to the owner.

In the morning, when they found Molly Mittens dead, they called me at home, at work and on my cell.  Sadly the phone calls were to late for me to help Molly.

The Board has no appeals process.
