On May 29, in Norilsk, there was a spill of petroleum products at a thermal power plant owned by Norilsk Nickel. 21 thousand tons of diesel fuel seeped into local rivers.

This is a real ecological disaster, after which the fragile ecosystem of the Arctic will not recover for many years.

The main cause, according the statement from Norilsk Nickel, is the warming of the permafrost, which resulted in the movement of the supports under the fuel tanks. According to Rosgidromet, the climate in Russia is changing 2.5 times faster than the global average. The Arctic region is the most vulnerable region to rising temperatures.

Recognition of an emergency is not enough. To prevent similar disasters in the future, we need to recognize the climate crisis and deal not only with the consequences of climate change but also with the causes.
We demand from the Government and the President of the Russian Federation:
1. Declare a climate emergency in Russia.
2. Speed up the process of developing regional climate change adaptation plans.
3. The government and big corporations should subsidize the renewable energy projects in the Arctic region.
4. Protect the interests of local residents who have been affected by this disaster.
