Provide option to withdraw from classes and tuition carry over to next semester at UVU

The Issue

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the spring 2020 semester has taken an unexpected turn.  Students' classes being put online has proven difficult to many.  Whether they are upperclassmen or first-semester freshmen, the transition has affected grades and productivity.  Many professors have had a hard time transitioning to online classes, and classes that are meant to be face-to-face, discussion-based, and hands-on have become extremely challenging.

Classes that require labs and group work have become nearly impossible to pass.  Tutoring has been canceled.  The school has not done a good job at communicating our grading options for this semester.  These are the options we have received:

https://www.uvu.edu/records/spring2020_grading.html

A withdrawal will not affect a GPA, but will affect classes that required the prerequisite, admission to programs, and admission to grad schools.  The pass/fail option will also affect admission to programs or further schools and will not transfer.  A letter grade seems to be the best option, but in many cases these grades are destroying GPAs, ruining scholarship opportunities, and are a great stressor to many students. The withdrawal and pass/fail options also may change scholarship eligibility.

As most working students are out of work right now as well as school, paying for next semester's tuition will be a financial strain, and if students are trying to further their education but had to withdraw or they failed because of the transition to online classes, they will have to retake their classes and pay the money anyways.

I move to have UVU provide an option for students to withdraw from their classes this semester with no negative repercussions and their paid tuition from spring 2020 carry-over to fall 2020.  Please consider signing and making a difference!
