Utility rate increase

The Issue

Mayor Cathleen DeSimone

The most recent utility bill has arrived with an 18%  increase for residential water, along with an added 10% increase in both sewer and rubbish fees, this has raised significant concerns among our community members. While we understand that the costs of services are rising nationwide, such steep hikes in basic utility rates place an undue burden on the residents who are already grappling with inflation and economic uncertainty.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index has seen an average increase of 3-4% annually over recent years. This sharp contrast compared to the actual increase of 18% and 10% increase is unjustifiable and places a disproportionate financial strain on many households in Attleboro.

Moreover, transparency in how these rates are calculated and used could greatly alleviate communal frustration.  We call upon the city to conduct a comprehensive and transparent review of the water, sewer and rubbish ensuring that the price increases are justified by clear and tangible cost increases. It's imperative that we explore possible alternatives, such as cost cutting measures within the water department budget, or seeking state or federal grants to subsidize these essential services.

By signing the petition, you are joining a community movement to demand that our city officials prioritize finding solutions that maintain fair utility rates without sacrificing integrity. Together let's ensure that Attleboro remains a thriving place where residents aren't unfairly overburdened. Please sign this petition to urge Mayor Cathleen DeSimone to reconsider reducing this increase and implement more equitable solutions for our community.
