Pet stores sell puppies from unethical breeders and/or puppymills. They have little to no regard to the welfare and well-being of the puppies they are selling. 99% of all puppies sold at pet stores have intestinal parasites and a staggering number are sold with respiratory diseases and other diseases such as parvo. Most pet stores rely on impulse buyers and because of this the purchaser is not ready for the commitment of caring for a life for the next 12-15years. Many of the puppies sold end up on KSL, Craigslist and in shelters just weeks and sometimes days after being bought. Because of the high volume of puppies being sold at Utah pet stores and the percentage of those sold puppies ending up in shelters it is making the NKUT( No Kill Utah) movement very difficult that shelters have worked so hard to achieve over the last several years. It is also adding to the millions of tax dollars being used by each city to care for these puppies that are ending up in Utah shelters. Over 70 jurisdictions across the country have banned the sales of puppies at retail stores, let's get Utah on that list!
Over 2,000 pet stores across the country have chose to adopt out puppies from shelters instead of purchasing puppies from unethical breeders and puppy mills. More lives could be saved, and less tax dollars wasted, if pet stores were held to the same standards and requirements as non-profit rescue groups. By working together, pet stores and rescue groups can save lives, provide medical care, and screen potential adopters to help ensure they are going to committed lifelong homes, and no longer being sold as impulse buys.We would love to see pet stores work with rescues and shelters to find homes for the puppies that are already there.
