Utah State Needs to Fire Defensive Coordinator Joe Cauthen
The Issue
Utah State Football Needs to fire Defensive Coordinator Joe Cauthen and hire a competent Defensive Coordinator! The Defense has been one of the worst in the NCAA. Nearly every opponent has had a season high of yardage and points against them, and just to top it off, A THIRD STRING Georgia State running back who entered the game with only 6 carries for 31 yards on the year ran for 276 yards. It was the most points Georgia State scored all season long, and they were missing several starters who had already entered the transfer portal and who they had available for other games where they scored fewer points than they did on USU. And this isn't a one game thing either, this has been happening all season long. They have been allowing opponents to convert nearly every 3rd and long, against Georgia State just like they have also been doing all season long. We likely led the country in blown coverages and missed tackles.
Joe Cauthen has been horrible everywhere he has been. He got fired from Houston cause his defense sucked there. Then he got fired from Buffalo cause his defense sucked there! And that's Houston and Buffalo University, not the Texans and Bills either.
Blake has been making excuses of how many defensive players were lost, but we are in an era where everyone loses badly needed starters to the transfer portal, least of all Boise State who our defense was porous against had already gone through the sting of losing their top receiver to the portal in the middle of the season.
We have talent which was wasted cause of an incompetent DC. The offense could have been better, but they also had games where good outputs were wasted with poor defense and games where they scored enough to bail out an incompetent defense.
A change of defensive coordinator must be made if we want to stop seeing the crap with blown coverages, missed tackles, and opponents converting 3rd and long amongst other things. Fire Joe Cauthen!
