High School Parents in Utah started this petition to Utah Governor and

Please sign this petition for our Utah State Governor, Utah Lt Governor, Local and County Mayors, School Districts and the UHSAA to change their decision to cancel Utah High School Spring Sports and time find another solution to allow these student-athletes to play their sports. Either delay the season or host a summer league or tournament.

For our seniors, but really, for all student-athletes, this decision was devastating to them.
For these athletes, this is a BIG DEAL.
This is the biggest thing in THEIR life. We are all dealing with different challenges right now - and not one is bigger than the other, because they are unique to each of us.

And while some may say, it’s just a year of sports or it’s just high school or it’s worth it if you help others.........but for some, this was it. For some of these athletes, this was their chance to finally play, their last year to get to play on the field with their teammates and friends, the last time they will get to wear their high school jerseys.

Some may go on to play in college, but most won’t. And for them, my heart breaks even more. Regardless what sport you play, what team you play for, what position you play, today meant the end of it all. And while it felt like the right decision from our government and school board, it did not give our athletes a light at the end of THEIR tunnel. In fact, it turned it off.

As a colleague had posted, this petition should also demonstrate how fitting most traditional spring athletic events are to both the loosening of the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” directive requirements while also maintaining appropriate and sensible social distancing guidelines.

The value of sport and competition is unquestionably woven into the fabric of our Great Nation and the Great State of Utah.  Historians often credit athletic competition and fandom as worthy distractions that have helped Americans move on from a variety of tragedies our nation has endured.

You see, sport has a way of uniting people.  I’m not sure people care as much about who wins a game after events like these, they simply want life to resemble something they are familiar with, something they value.  Even if for that two hours of a day Americans can get lost in watching people play a game, those two hours can be what gets them through the heartbreak and desperation that circumstance brings to bear in their lives.

In conclusion, we hope that as the Governor’s taskforce begins to roll out of the stabilization phase of Utah’s Economic Response Plan that the resumption of youth and high school athletics are considered.  Many politicians and experts have considered the Coronavirus the Pearl Harbor and September 11th moment of this generation.  As was the case in recovery from both of these events, it is my belief that athletics, particularly those that involve our own children, will help us heal and move forward.

Please work with all of us on a way to safety allow our kids, especially the seniors, to get in some of their lost season in either a delayed season or a summer league or tournament. We owe it to our kids to figure this out. We are better than taking the easy way out.
