Utah Drivers Deserve Free Apple Wallet IDs — End the Paid GET App
The Issue
As Utah residents, we are frustrated with the current paid mobile driver’s license system and urge you to make meaningful changes as part of the new State-Endorsed Digital Identity Program.
The Problem:
Utah currently requires residents to use the third-party GET Mobile ID app for a digital driver’s license. After a short free trial, it costs $1.99 per year. This means paying for a separate app instead of using the secure, built-in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet that millions of us already use every day. Utah was announced as an early participant for Apple Wallet support back in 2021, yet years later it is still not available.
Our Request:
As the current GET Mobile ID program sunsets on January 1, 2027, we ask that the new digital identity program prioritizes:
• Immediate full integration of Utah driver’s licenses and state IDs directly into Apple Wallet and Google Wallet — free for all users.
• No subscription fees or paid third-party apps for basic mobile ID use.
• Strong privacy protections, voluntariness, and user control as outlined in the Digital Identity Bill of Rights from Senate Bill 275.
Why This Matters:
• Convenience: A native Wallet ID is faster and easier at airports (TSA), businesses, and age verification — exactly what modern digital IDs should be.
• Fairness: Utahns should not have to pay extra for a service the state is already developing.
• Progress: Many other states have successfully launched free Wallet-based digital IDs. Utah can and should lead, not lag.
• Privacy: Native Wallet integration gives us better control over what information we share, aligning with the new law’s goals.
I am a Utah resident tired of managing yet another app and paying for basic government services that should be seamless in 2026. Many others feel the same.
We urge Governor Spencer Cox, the Utah Driver License Division (DLD), and the Utah State Legislature to accelerate Apple and Google Wallet support and eliminate the paid app requirement before and during the 2027 transition. Please respond publicly to this petition and update residents on the timeline.
Sign this petition if you want a free, convenient, and modern mobile driver’s license in Utah!
Please share this with friends and family in Utah, and consider contacting your state legislator and the DLD directly.
Thank you for supporting better digital services for Utahns.
