Dear Adult Age Group Competition Committee:

I am writing to let you know my disappointment that the USTA has removed the National Indoor Father-Daughter at the South Barrington Club from its Level 1 / gold ball tournaments. Without this status, the tournament is no longer being held.

We have played the tournament for many years and it is consistently well attended and extremely well run. I know that generally the indoor tournament draws are smaller but that does not mean that this one is any less competitive or challenging; simply look at the distinguished names of the previous winners.  The team at Barrington has always made sure that this tournament is just as special as the others. They make us feel like guests in their home club. Members come to watch the matches and courts are always made available - even for practice. A wonderful dinner is held on site each year and Jay and his team are generally the most warm and gracious hosts.

Removing a tournament from the Father-Daughter circuit leaves a big hole. Without the Barrington tournament, midwest and indoor players never have a home field advantage and always have to travel to the coasts (other tournaments are in San Diego, Florida, and Boston). It also means that there is little opportunity to compete nationally during the winter season, creating a seven month gap in the season. As this is a family level tournament, it is also important to have four tournaments as many of the competitors have other life events (births, weddings, health issues, etc) so having multiple dates to plan into allows for many opportunities to play. Without a fourth tournament I fear that participation will drop as having fewer opportunities to play will only make it harder to find the time to do so, and people will get out of the habit. There are so many teams who come to three or four tournaments a year and that is what makes it so much fun -- seeing the same teams who have become lifelong friends every few months.

Tennis is a unique sport in that it provides an opportunity to compete well into the 80s or 90s. We should prioritize adult tennis and especially those divisions that provide opportunities to compete through multiple generations; that is how you build the future generations of tennis players. I have been playing Father-Daughter for 25 years and I plan to compete as long as I can, but having multiple tournaments is critical.

Please reconsider your decision to drop the South Barrington Indoor National Father-Daughter from Level 1 status, we will miss this tournament and hope we can reinstate it for 2022.
