Keep philosophy classes open longer before cutting them due to lack of enrollment

The University of Southern Mississippi's philosophy department continues shrinking, and as a result, the department is at risk of being cut or merged in with another department. I've spoken with other philosophy students and faculty, and part of the speculated reason the philosophy department is small and shrinking is because many philosophy classes are cut before students even have the opportunity to enroll. For example, during my advisement in Spring '16, I put "Environmental Ethics" on my schedule for the Fall semester. However, before Summer classes even began, I received an email saying the ethics class had been dropped due to lack of enrollment. I believe that had this class been open through the summer, more students would have enrolled and the class would not have been cut. The goal of this petition is to make the chair of the philosophy department aware of this issue and for him to ameliorate this by leaving classes open for enrollment for a longer period instead of cutting them so soon. Perhaps as a result the philosophy department will have more graduates per year, considering more classes can be offered and actually taken.
