Fordham USG Sustainability Committee started this petition to USG Sustainability Commitee

Non-renewable energy creates greenhouse gases which leads to climate change, water and air pollution, habitat loss and damage to public health. The use of non-renewable energy at Fordham is a major problem that is contributing to the destruction of the environment. It is a problem that we hope will not go unnoticed.

On behalf of the students of Fordham University, we believe that there are necessary steps that Fordham should be taking to increase the use of renewable resources on our campus.  The university should do its part in aligning itself to Governor Cuomo’s 2040 zero carbon initiative.

Fordham has already taken steps to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Over the summer, Fordham installed solar panels on the roof of the parking facility at Rose Hill. In addition, 20% of Fordham’s electricity use is being offset by a new solar installation in Staten Island. However, there is much more that we can do and must do to become dependent on renewables and preserve life as we know it.

We, the members of USG Sustainability Committee, strongly urge Fordham University to commit our campus to a goal of powering all buildings and vehicles with clean, renewable energy by 2040, in compliance with Governor Cuomo’s energy goal for the entirety of New York. As part of that goal, we urge Fordham to power all campus lighting with renewable energy by 2030. Fordham has the opportunity to reflect its Jesuit values and act as a leader of sustainability for other Jesuit universities, and we believe that this goal is worth pursuit.
