The scope of the issue of sexual assault and violence at the hands of fraternity men is no surprise to anyone, but it has recently come to light how many victims there are at USF. It is not enough for these councils to promise to “learn” and “listen.” They have had years to elicit change through those means, the time is up. It has been proven time and time again that these organizations are not capable of self-policing and truly upholding their ideals which typically include things such as honor and respect. Men of honor and respect do not violate women and they do not sit by while their brothers violate women either. To allow these fraternities to recruit and host social events in the fall would be a slap in the face to all of the brave survivors who have sacrificed their own comfort to share their stories. Sexual violence disproportionately impacts women, especially black women. USF constantly promotes how much it cares about its students and its diversity. If USF truly cares about these things they will take these immediate measures to protect black women as well as all other women at USF. We do not want another statement. We don’t want you to “hear us,” we want you to do something. Suspend all fall Greek fraternity activities at USF.
