Use brownfield and rooftops for solar panels, not countryside
The Issue
In our cherished North Yorkshire, a place known for its breathtaking beauty and natural landscapes, there are plans to transform 2,500 acres of countryside into solar parks bristling with electrical infrastructure. This is not just a local issue—it is happening across the UK, threatening our rural landscapes and the wildlife that depends on them. We believe this is a misguided approach to sustainability; losing our precious countryside is not the answer.
Solar energy is crucial to our future energy strategy, but we must implement it responsibly. Studies show that using brownfield sites and rooftops is not only more sustainable, but can also be more economically efficient. The UK has over 26,000 hectares of brownfield land, much of which is viable for development and could accommodate the necessary infrastructure without losing our countryside.
Integrating solar solutions into urban environments can help meet renewable energy targets without sacrificing our rural heritage. Projects on rooftops and brownfield sites minimise impacts on wildlife and ecosystems compared to developments on greenfield land.
By prioritising already-developed or industrial land for solar projects, we protect both our environment and agricultural lands, preserving the green backdrop of our beloved countryside, food security and supporting biodiversity.
Join us in urging policymakers and industry leaders to focus solar development on brownfield and rooftop sites rather than our rural landscapes. Together, we can lead the way in sustainable energy solutions that respect and protect our unique natural heritage.
