Let’s Change Shein!

The Issue

Like many young people, I loved Shein. The styles are cute, trendy and affordable. Yet this major corporate brand employs many unethical practices. Each product is individually wrapped in plastic, and the work environment is horrendous. A recent study sent an undercover worker to explore the situation in Shein factories, the results were terrifying. Women had to wash their hair during their sort lunch periods because they did not have enough time at home, some worked 18 hours a day for only 5 cents per garment, they were given only 1 day off a month, the workers had to endure many other horrible situations. I highly recommend to read this article to learn more https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/report-horrific-working-conditions-at-shein-193524024.html . They are barely making an effort to use eco friendly materials, and in fact use hazardous chemicals, creating carbon emissions and even micro plastics!  (Source: https://goodonyou.eco )  Recent research suggests that Shein even uses dangerous amounts of lead (a toxic chemical) in their clothing (Source: www.cbc.ca . Shein isn’t only fast fashion, it’s a sweatshop. And the reason it’s so popular is because the clothing prices are a bargain. But, the quality of the clothing is appallingly bad. The clothing rips easily, shrinks in the wash, pills, and is staticky because the majority of the fabrics used are polyester, nylon or spandex. All of those fabrics are horrible for the environment. Shein also has a past of producing very racist items. Luckily, they’ve removed them but it goes to show that they were and are continuing to make thoughtless, ignorant and harmful choices. Signing this petition will show  Shein how many people care about their workers, which will hopefullyresult in them changing their unethical choices and policies by introducing eco friendly packaging and materials and also changing their workplace policies. To make things worse, Shein is being questioned about using Uyghurs, a ethnic group in China. They are kept in labor camps, and tortured just because they are Muslim. They are forced to eat pork and drink alcohol. The women are raped and forced to removed their Hijabs in front of men which is not allowed in Islam. And, mass murders might be going on in the camps. These Uyghurs are the ones behind most of our favorite Fast Fashion brands. (https://www.politico.com/news/2023/06/05/shein-china-forced-labor-claims-lobbying-fast-fashion-).I know that this is a crime against humanity, and we need to take appropriate action to help the Uyghurs. Boycotting places like Shein is a great way you can make a change!! Educating people on the importance of ethical workplace policies is super important! I definitely recommend telling people about social Justice issues that inspire you, remember you can change the world if you put your mind to it! Anyways, You can start shopping at ethical companies such as: Adidas, Levi’s, Columbia, Patagonia, North Face and more. You can also shop at small businesses and thrift shops. Obviously the prices do not compare but it won’t endanger the world. We the people are the future of the world and need to make ethical choices that not only protect our environment, protect our Mother Earth. Thank you.
