What if a novel that claims a daughter of a Nazi officer was raped by Jewish people, is used as a required textbook for American middle schools?

"So Far from the Bamboo Grove", the novel that turns a perpetrator into a victim and a rapist into a victim!

Schools and the Department of Education of every state should stop using this book!

The book, "So Far From the Bamboo Grove" which has controversial history distortion issue, has been adopted as a required textbook by several Departments of Education of the United States and is being taught to middle school students.

"So Far From the Bamboo Grove" is an autobiographical novel by American-Japanese Yoko Kawashima Watkins published in 1986.

The book follows the plot of an 11-year-old Japanese girl Yoko, who lived with her mother and older sister, returning to Japan from North Hamgyeong Province, Korea, and her hard life in Japan around the end of World War Ⅱ.

However, in this novel, Koreans are described as wicked people and racists who raped and assaulted Japanese people who are returning home after the defeat of the War, while Japanese people are portrayed as unjust victims and wartime refugees.

If a student learns the contents of this book without knowing the history of East Asia and the history of Korea during the Japanese colonial period, the student will perceive history as distorted, as if Koreans were perpetrators and Japanese were victims. What's worse is that this book, known to vividly depict the horrors of war that lasted long in the past, and because of its excellence literary value, this book is being used as an anti-war textbook for American schools, teachers, and teenagers. It was designated as a recommended and required-reading book in the language and social studies section of grades 6-8, and was introduced as a guidebook for American teachers.

 

In 2007, protest campaigns by Korean Americans led California State Government to expel the book from public schools, but it is still adopted as a "required reading" book in eight states, including Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Massachusetts, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina, and Utah.

It is also used as a book for English learners at a community college in Oregon, and the World War Ⅱ museum in Louisiana recommends it for middle school students to learn more about war.

An educational reference book even says, "What did you learn about history from this novel? What did you learn about human nature? Use your answers to these questions to write a proposal to persuade a history teacher that this book would be a good addition to a World War Ⅱ history lesson."

The book, which has repeatedly distorted history and portrayed Koreans as perpetrators and Japanese as victims, is introduced as a "true story", and the petition against it being sold worldwide via Amazon can be found in more detail on the link below.

"So Far From the Bamboo Grove" cunningly introduces a "novel" as if it were a "true story". On the back cover of the book states "It's a true story of courage and survival", but on the other hand, on the second page of the book says "Summary: A fictionalized autobiography in which eleven-year-old Yoko escapes from Korea to Japan at the end of World War Ⅱ."

It is said that the "truth" is the first thing to be sacrificed in war. To say that a novel that distorts the truth contains a "true story" is in itself absurd. The novel should not yet be taught to students in middle school all over the U.S. as if it were a true story.

If one learns the novel without knowing about Imperialist Japan's 35 years of forced occupation of the Korean Peninsula and the invasion of Asia, the one will understand the history of Asians, including Koreans suffering from Imperialist Japan, with misunderstandings and prejudices.

This novel added distortion to the truth that has already been damaged by the war itself. It is not an easy task to correct distortions of damaged truth and make it known in right way. However, correcting the distortions that have been prevalent in this book for nearly 40 years and bringing the truth right must begin now.

Schools and the Department of Education of every state should stop using this book!

In 2007, protest campaigns by Korean Americans led California State Government to expel the book from public schools, but as we saw earlier, many other states still use it as a required textbook or in classes, so we need Korean Americans' active participation.

We demand the schools that belong to each state's Department of Education listed below to stop using "So Far From the Bamboo Grove" in classes.

가해자가 피해자가 되고, 강간범이 강간당했다고 둔갑한 소설! "요코 이야기"

미국 각 주 교육부와 학교들은 요코 이야기를 활용한 수업을 중단해야 합니다!

역사 왜곡 논란이 있는 “요코 이야기”는 미국 여러 주 교육부에서 필수 교재로 채택되어 중학생들에게 가르쳐 지고 있습니다.

'요코 이야기'는 일본계 미국인 작가 요코 가와시마 왓킨스가 1986년 출간한 자전적 소설입니다.

제2차 세계 대전이 끝날 무렵, 11살 일본인 소녀 요코가 어머니, 언니와 함께 살던 함경북도에서 일본으로 귀환하기까지의 경험담과 일본에서의 힘든 삶 등을 줄거리로 하고 있습니다.

그러나 이 소설에는 패전 후 귀국하는 일본인들이 한국인들로부터 강간과 폭행을 당했다며 한국인을 사악한 사람들과 강간자로 묘사한 반면 일본인들은 억울한 피해자와 전쟁 난민으로 표현되어 있습니다.

동아시아 역사와 일제강점기 한국 역사를 모르는 상태에서 이 책의 내용을 배우게 되면 한국인이 가해자이고 일본인이 피해자인 것처럼 역사를 왜곡된 채로 인식하게 됩니다. 심각한 것은 이 책이 과거 오랫동안 이어진 전쟁의 참상을 생생히 묘사하고, 문학성이 우수하다는 이유로 미국 학교와 교사, 청소년을 위한 반전(反戰) 교재로 사용되고 있다는 것입니다. 6∼8학년 언어·사회 부문 추천 도서·필독서로 지정됐고, 특히 미국 교사들을 위한 지도 지침서로도 소개됐습니다.

2007년 재미한인들을 중심으로 항의 운동을 펼쳐 캘리포니아 주 정부가 이 책을 공립학교들에서 퇴출시켰지만, 현재 콜로라도, 코네티컷, 조지아, 매사추세츠, 네바다, 오하이오, 사우스캐롤라이나, 유타 등 8개 주에서는 여전히 필수 도서로 채택되고 있습니다.

또 오리건 주의 한 2년제 대학에서는 영어를 배우는 학생들이 쓰는 책으로 활용되며, 루이지애나 주의 2차 세계대전 박물관에서는 중학생들에게 전쟁에 관한 내용을 더 배울 수 있는 책으로 추천하고 있습니다.

심지어 한 교육 참고서에는 “이 소설을 통해 역사에 대해 어떤 것을 배웠나요? 인간 본성에 대해 어떤 것을 배웠나요? 이 질문들에 대한 답을 활용해 역사 선생님에게 이 책이 제 2차 세계대전 수업 시간에 추가해서 활용하기에 좋은 책이라는 제안서를 써 보세요.”라고 하고 있습니다.

요코 이야기는 교묘하게 “소설”을 “실화”인 마냥 소개하고 있습니다. 책의 뒷 표지에는 “It's a true story of courage and survival(용기와 생존의 실화를 담은 책)”이라고 소개하고 있는 반면, 앞표지 뒷장에는 “Summary: A fictionalized autobiography in which eleven-year-old Yoko escapes from Korea to Japan at the end of World War Ⅱ.(요약: 11살 요코가 제 2차 세계대전 말엽에 한국에서 일본까지 탈출하는 소설화된 자서전)”이라고 되어 있습니다.

전쟁에서 가장 먼저 희생되는 것이 “진실”이라고 합니다. 진실을 왜곡시킨 소설이 “실화”를 담고 있다고 하는 것 자체가 어불성설입니다. 요코이야기가 실화인 것 마냥 아직까지도 미국 곳곳의 중학교에서 학생들에게 가르쳐져서는 안 됩니다.

제국주의 일본의 35년간의 한반도 강제점령과 아시아 침략 전쟁에 관해 모른 채 요코 이야기를 배우게 되면, 제국주의 일본으로부터 고통 받은 한국인들을 비롯한 아시아인들의 역사를 오해와 선입견을 가진 채 이해하게 될 것입니다.

전쟁 자체로 이미 훼손되어버린 진실에 요코 이야기는 왜곡을 더했습니다. 훼손된 진실의 왜곡을 바로 잡고 이를 바로 알리는 일은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 하지만 이미 약 40년 동안 요코 이야기가 널리 퍼트려 온 왜곡을 바로 잡고 진실을 제대로 알리는 일은 지금 당장 시작해야 합니다.

미국 각 주 교육부와 학교들은 요코 이야기를 활용한 수업을 중단해야 합니다!

2007년 재미한인들의 항의 운동을 통해 캘리포니아 주 정부가 이 책을 공립학교들에서 퇴출시켰지만 앞서 본 바와 같이 아직 다른 많은 주에서 이 책을 필수 교재로 채택하거나 수업에서 사용하고 있기에 특히 미국에 살고 있는 한인들의 적극적인 참여가 필요합니다.

우리는 아래에 열거된 미국의 주 교육부에 소속된 학교들이 요코 이야기를 활용한 수업을 중단할 것을 요구합니다.
