Stop I-49 from Destroying our Homes in Allendale Neighborhood, Shreveport, Louisiana
The Issue
Allendale Neighborhood is under attack. Interstate-49 is currently being studied by Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Northwest Louisiana Council of Governments, to be built through the historic and culturally significant Black neighborhood of Allendale, just west of downtown Shreveport, Louisiana. To make matters worse, an arsonist has been setting fires in abandoned homes, 8 homes this week alone. Public information meetings are to be held this month and the Shreveport City Council is taking a premature and unprecedented vote to approve building a highway through Allendale. At a time when American cities are studying the costly and tragic negative consequences of inner-city connector highways and removing them. We advocate for Allendale, a historic and culturally significant Black neighborhood to continue to rebuild itself not as a traffic corridor, but as a neighborhood and an economic corridor with mixed use residential and commercial real estate. Please sign this petition and tell U.S. Department of Transportation, LADOTD, NLCOG, and Shreveport City Council, "No Build is Always an Option".1) We want an at grade business boulevard to connect I-49 at I-20 to I-49 North of I220. Reinvest and use North Market Street/US Highway 71 as part of this economic corridor.2) We are against a cut-through expressway through Allendale neighborhood in Shreveport, LA or any other neighborhood.
