vegan options for all public schools

The Issue

Schools do not currently provide healthy, nutritious options for the dietary needs of all students. Many students follow a vegan/vegetarian diet for numerous reasons. This includes health, ethical and religious reasons. A vegan diet can help reduce heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Michelle Obama promotes the idea of having a healthy lifestyle and eating healthy in school can help reach that goal. Muslims, many Buddhists and Hindus do not eat meat because they believe animals should not be consumed. Schools are responsible to provide nutritious lunch for all dietary needs. However, schools do not currently provide healthy, nutritious options for the dietary needs of all students. Most meals in public schools contain animal products, and students following a vegan/vegetarian diet are limited to eating foods that may not provide all of the nutrients a teenager needs. Most teens need between 40 and 60 grams of protein a day. Not providing a diverse lunch that satisfies the dietary needs of every student is preventing them from having a nutritious meal that will help them in school. If students do not have a proper meal, they will not reach their fullest potential in school and having a proper nutritious diet is what will help them achieve this goal.
