Implement anti-racism focused courses within all levels of our education system
The Issue
Anti-racism courses in all levels of education would lessen the number of racists in the country. While racism is being taught to children at home we could neutralize and outweigh those teachings by teaching children at school to be anti-racist. A child believes that a teacher is someone with a large amount of knowledge and correct information, this trust could be used to teach children in kid friendly ways not to be racist, treat others equally and also understand the differences between other races. Planting these teachings for them to think about early on would only allow them to grow up with a more realistic understanding of the world. This course wouldn't necessarily have to be an entirely new subject but there are more than enough days in the school calendar year for them to take the time to touch on such an important topic. We can tell all children across America that Columbus was the first to discover America Only for them to grow up and learn it wasn't true so why can’t we actually teach something that is true and forever relevant? The new generation will outlive the older and pass on their knowledge to the next that's a truth about life.
I believe that we can all come to a consensus that racism is a major problem within our country and has outstayed its time in America. As we continue our fight against racism we sometimes come across those who are heavily racist or subtly racist whether it be in public, in private or online. We may get into arguments physically or verbally against them hoping that the outcome would be for them to understand that their racist thinking is unacceptable, yet most of the time they stay ignorant to the problem with being racist. Another thing we can all agree on is that racism is taught and nobody in this world is born racist. They are taught by parents, communities and others to hate someone for the color of their skin. Racism is difficult to simply unlearn and I believe that we waste a lot of our energy trying to argue with other adults who've been retaining racist ideals their entire lives. I think that our energy towards tackling racism should be focused towards the younger generation.
I am calling for the U.S Secretary of Education, U.S. Department of Education and those in charge of education in other states to consider this idea as a possible solution. As a black man whose education was based off the American education system I thoroughly believe that this can be achieved and should be. A parent who wouldn't want their child to learn to understand and treat others properly is blatantly racist. So don't fail us because change lies in the youth!
