Today, the EUobserver released an article titled "Disturbing Accounts of Abuse Faced by Asylum Seekers",  highlighting the plight of our 104 members. The article sheds light on the violent pushback, abuse and torture endured by our detained members in what the article described as an EU-funded Turkish detention center.

The article also included British journalist and member of the faith, Alexandra Foreman’s witness testimony, who shared her personal experience of being detained at the center. Alexandra describes the dire conditions faced by the detainees, including lack of food, medical care, and reports of torture.

The article also mentions a Human Rights Watch report from the previous year that highlighted similar accounts of abuse in EU-funded Turkish detention centers, including the provision of inedible food and forced deportations. 

Furthermore, the article stated that the UNHCR is monitoring the case and advocating against the deportation of the group. 

Additionally, the article discusses concerns about the group’s safety in Turkey and their unsuccessful attempts to seek asylum in Bulgaria through humanitarian visas and official border crossings. It highlights the contradiction between Bulgaria's visa laws and the country's asylum act which states that asylum seekers “need only submit a verbal statement in front of a border guard”. 

According to the article, Turkey was approached for further comment, but did not respond.

Lastly, the article emphasizes how the case of the 104 demonstrated the difficulties faced by individuals trying to enter EU member states, leaving them with no alternative but the use of increasingly dangerous smuggling routes. It mentions Bulgaria's existing border fence and the further tightening of security with EU-funded drones and surveillance technology.
