Han Wern David Lee (David) is 34 years old and had been totally blind since birth. He is a valuable member of the Australian community and has lived in Australia for over 10 years. However, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection refused to grant David a residency visa and he was asked him to leave the country by 20 June 2017. He has now been granted a temporary visa until 4 July 2017. Hence, with a visa valid for less than two weeks, David is urgently seeking support for this petition to the Minister, requesting that his case be reconsidered and a residency visa granted.
David came to Australia from Malaysia in early 2007. He studied very successfully at the University of Adelaide, gaining a gained Certificate IV in Music in 2008 and a Bachelor of Music Studies in 2010. While at University, he was a respected resident of St Mark’s College in North Adelaide. Since then, he has learnt to live alone independently and to support himself. David is extremely capable and intelligent. He has worked hard to integrate into Australian life and has done so very effectively. People are amazed at how well he can live independently (in a rented unit), earn a living, use public transport and get around the city of Adelaide by himself. He is a person of honesty and integrity who has never committed any criminal offences and has always complied with the law. He has paid his bills and paid his income tax.
After completing his degree, David had hoped to establish himself as a private music tutor. However, he first had to learn independent living skills, and by the time he had done so and been granted an appropriate visa, there was not time for him to meet the requirements before the visa regulations changed, to his great disadvantage.
Nevertheless, David has served the Australian community by working to assist other disabled people. He has been working for Australian Disability Sport Inc. since 2011. Its Executive Director writes:
“David Lee is without question our most reliable and consistent fundraiser. He works five days each week and earns enough money to support himself. David Lee is the backbone of our Adelaide based team.
“We understand that David is currently having his Australian Residency Visa reviewed… Australian Disability Sport would be more than happy to sponsor David if that is an option. He has regular and ongoing work with us for as long as he desires…
“Australia needs more role models like David Lee so we will do anything within our power to keep him in Australia.”
David has also continued to use his musical skills and has been performing as a musician in The Craic four-piece band since May 2014. The band performs for charity and for various events.
David has also taken part in choral singing at his local church. As a Christian, he attends church services when he is able, and has also taken part in regular Bible studies.
David greatly appreciates the opportunities that Australia has been giving him to develop and use his skills and abilities. He now asks that you sign this petition for him to be granted a permanent residency visa that will allow him to continue to live and work in Australia, continuing to make a positive contribution to the country he has come to love and appreciate.
