Urgent Support for Deported Afghan Refugees from Iran
The Issue
To:
United Nations (UN)
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
International NGOs and Human Rights Organizations
Subject: Appeal for Immediate Humanitarian Assistance and Protection for Afghan Refugees Deported from Iran
Dear Respected Organizations,
We, the undersigned, urgently call on international humanitarian bodies, including the United Nations, UNHCR, and reputable NGOs, to intervene and provide emergency assistance to Afghan refugees who are currently being forcibly deported from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Thousands of Afghan men, women, and children are being deported — often without warning — and arriving at the border with nothing. Many were not allowed to collect their belongings, and in numerous cases, Iranian landlords refused to return their security deposits or personal items, leaving them destitute and vulnerable.
Even more concerning, some of these deportations involve Afghans who held valid passports and visas, yet they were forcibly removed, raising serious concerns of discrimination and violation of legal rights.
We respectfully request the international community to urgently act by:
- Providing immediate shelter, food, clean water, and transportation for deported refugees at the border.
- Deploying emergency medical aid teams to treat injuries, illnesses, and trauma resulting from unsafe deportations.
- Calling on the Iranian government to halt all violent or inhumane deportation practices and ensure safe, dignified, and voluntary returns, with sufficient notice and respect for legal documentation.
- Monitoring and documenting human rights abuses against Afghan refugees in Iran and ensuring accountability.
- Coordinating with Afghan local authorities and aid agencies to ensure long-term resettlement plans for those forcibly returned.
The Afghan people have suffered greatly in recent years, and these forced returns — conducted with violence, fear, and no humanitarian planning — are adding to a growing humanitarian disaster. Refugees should never be treated as less than human.
We ask for your immediate action to protect these vulnerable populations and uphold their basic rights.
Sincerely,
Mohammad Shafi Mohammadi
