URGENT: Shut Down All Canadian Slaughterhouses for Animal and Human Cruelty Issues
The Issue
Each day, sentient farm animals are killed by the millions in slaughterhouses, their lives ended in moments of intense fear and pain. These slaughterhouses are not just a place of torment for these innocent beings, but also for the workers. The profiles of these workers are often those of the vulnerable, with no other recourse but a job that warrants them to kill for money, they are often temporary migrant workers. So far I have met at least 3 who have worked in a slaughterhouse and they say it causes traumas. The memories of slitting animal throats would be hard to erase. Robert Pickton the pig farmer from BC murdered 49 vulnerable women and other murders of women and children have happened in Canada as well. Highway of tears and so many missing and murdered indigenous sisters 😭 and I personally know 2 women who were murdered.
It's crucial to note that Canada slaughters over 800 million animals for food each year (source: Canadian Coalition for Farm Animals), a staggering number that outranks human population by a wide margin. This level of mass killing is traumatic for any worker, regardless of their circumstances. Canada’s Federal Health and Safety Legislation (Part II of the Canada Labour Code) clearly stipulates that every employee has the right to an environment that ensures physical and mental safety. Unfortunately, slaughterhouses do not provide such an environment.
Over 92 billion are slaughtered globally every year. It is a LOT of killing 😭😭😭
Furthermore, animal agriculture is a major contributor to environmental destruction. Rainforests are being slashed and burned to raise cattle for slaughter. If all lands used for animal agriculture are rewilded it would free up a land mass the size of Africa and those lands can be used as a carbon trap and can help reverse global warming.
Animal agriculture is a leading driver of environmental destruction, contributing significantly to deforestation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. It produces more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire global transportation sector, exacerbating climate change. In Canada, millions of tons of animal waste contaminate waterways, while vast amounts of land and resources are used to grow feed crops, leading to soil degradation and habitat destruction. Shutting down slaughterhouses and transitioning to plant-based food systems is a crucial step toward protecting the environment, conserving resources, and ensuring a sustainable future for all Earthlings including children 🙏🙏🙏
Please do each our own part by immediately choosing to be vegan and please sign this petition to shut slaughterhouses down and protect the rights and lives of all vulnerable sentient beings 🙏🌱🕊😻
Let's come together as a community willing to make a difference in the lives of countless animals and hardworking citizens forced into such harrowing situations out of sheer necessity. It's time to shut down all slaughterhouses across Canada, to cease the grievous harm done to sentient farm animals and the workers. Sign our petition and help pave the way for a more compassionate tomorrow.
This equates to an average of about 2.3 million animals slaughtered daily in Canada.
The breakdown by species is as follows:
Meat chickens: 767,847,756
Egg-laying hens & breeding chickens: 23,773,792
Pigs: 21,542,608
Turkeys: 19,234,269
Ducks & geese: 4,577,813
Adult cows (dairy & meat): 3,446,282
Sheep & lambs: 497,101
Calves: 187,959
These figures only account for land animals slaughtered and entering the food supply; they exclude animals that die on farms or during transport, as well as aquatic animals like fish and shellfish, whose numbers are measured by weight rather than individual counts.
