The Issue

The Problem:

We, the residents, motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians of Theescombe, Gqeberha, are calling on the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to urgently widen and upgrade Horseshoe Drive and Horseshoe Crescent.
Due to rapid local development, vehicle volumes have increased drastically. The current road width is structurally deficient and fails to meet the South African CSIR minimum safety standard of 5.5 metres for two-way residential thoroughfares. Oncoming vehicles are routinely forced to drive off the asphalt and onto unpaved verges to avoid head-on collisions.
This infrastructure deficit creates an immediate, high-risk safety hazard for motorists, and completely compromises the safety of vulnerable road users, including local walkers, runners, and cyclists.

The Solution:

We demand that the NMBM Infrastructure and Engineering Directorate immediately:
Commission an urgent Traffic Engineering Assessment of the Horseshoe Drive/Crescent loop.
Allocate budget to widen the paved roadway to safe, legal standards or install formalized, stabilized pedestrian walkways.
Implement immediate interim traffic-calming measures and safety signage warning motorists of the narrow roadway.
