Residents of Lonaconing have faced years of unsafe, unreliable water service, enduring major outages, boil-water advisories, high turbidity, and repeated service disruptions due to failing infrastructure. Families in our community have been forced to rely on emergency distribution just to perform basic tasks like cooking, cleaning, and caring for their children. Yet, despite these hardships, we have continued to pay our water bills in full and on time.

Now, however, we find ourselves facing the possibility of increased water rates. A public notice has announced a hearing on April 6, 2026, to discuss the increase, attributing the need to the town's significant debt—allegedly between $400,000 and $500,000—in unpaid water costs for services rendered through Frostburg.

This situation is unacceptable. It is unjust for Lonaconing residents to bear the financial burden of mismanagement and failed infrastructure. We, as a community, deserve transparent and fair resolution processes, financial accountability, and sustainable solutions to our water crisis.

We call upon the town officials and local government to prioritize the following actions:
1. Conduct a comprehensive audit of the water services to identify the root causes of financial mismanagement and unpaid costs.
2. Delay any decision on rate increases until the audit findings are made public and all stakeholders have had an opportunity to discuss viable solutions.
3. Develop a long-term infrastructure improvement plan that prevents service disruptions and ensures safe, clean water for all residents.
4. Establish an emergency fund or assistance program for families who may be disproportionately affected by any future rate changes.

These measures are crucial not only for rectifying the current situation but also for rebuilding trust between local authorities and residents. Water is a human right, and it is vital that Lonaconing residents receive the quality service they deserve without undue financial hardship.
