URGENT: Regulation Impact on Behaviour Analysis in Ontario

URGENT: Regulation Impact on Behaviour Analysis in Ontario
The Issue
Who are we?
We are professionals working in the field of applied behaviour analysis who are supporting families receiving ABA services.
What are our concerns?
We have serious concerns about how the upcoming regulation process as it currently stands may impact quality, public safety, standards of practice, and access to service delivery in Ontario.
Don't we want regulation to happen?
Yes! We value the regulation of Behaviour Analysis in Ontario, but with a more critical lens. We are concerned about the long-term impact and the future of ABA in Ontario with the Act as it is currently written.
What's the concern about the Act?
The wording in the Act is one of the primary reasons the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB®), an internationally recognized gold standard in the field of ABA has to discontinue its involvement in Ontario. As of July 1st, 2024, RBT®s and BCaBA®s in Ontario will be put on involuntary inactive status, due to strict title protection in the new regulations. In addition, after July 1st, 2026 Ontario residents will no longer be able to apply for all BACB® credentials (including BCBA® & BCBA-D®).
What's the solution? What can be done?
There are easy solutions that allow regulation and BACB® credentials to co-exist in Ontario, similar to other state models of licensure.
What are we asking for?
Answers! We want to understand how the current plan could impact the field of behaviour analysis in Ontario long-term, and what information was used to form the Ontario-specific certification plan. The key concerns we have about the current regulation as it stands are:
1. What, if any, supply impact may occur?
2. What, if any, quality assurance and/or quality control impacts may occur?
3. What, if any, impact on labor mobility issues may occur?
4. What impacts may occur on Ontario college training programs?
What can you do about it?
- Public: Do you share our concerns?
- Families: Are you worried about how these changes may impact your family's services?
- Professionals: Do you want the possibility to keep your credential and maintain your use of BACB credentials in Ontario?
- Professionals & Students: Do you want the option to continue to pursue BACB® credentials in Ontario (RBT®, BCaBA®, BCBA®, BCBA-D®)?
