Urgent! Protection of Canadian citizens participating in the March to Gaza required!
The Issue
Dear: Canadian Embassy (Egypt)/ Minister Anita Anand Global Affairs Canada / MP Wayne Long/Canadian MP’s
I am writing with deep concern regarding members of the Canadian delegation currently in Egypt participating in the Global March to Gaza, a peaceful humanitarian citizen-led initiative that demands:
-The permanent opening of Rafah for humanitarian aid
-Immediate cessation of illegal military occupation and bombing in Gaza
-Global support for reconstruction efforts
-An end to the colonization of Palestine
These demands are part of a broader call to action rooted in justice for the Palestinian people, in response to the ongoing genocide, enforced blockade, and international inaction. aimed at drawing attention to the devastating seige and genocide in Gaza.
Earlier today, a Canadian was unlawfully detained for 8 hours and many were deported. Also, this delegation was stopped by Egyptian authorities near the Rafah border and is reportedly being pressured to leave the country. While we are relieved that all participants are currently safe, this is a deeply troubling situation. These Canadian citizens are engaged in lawful, non-violent action, and their rights must be respected and protected.
On June 14th 2025, March To Gaza lead organizer for Canadian delegation Manuel Tapiel and his wife Baya were unlawfully detained by Egyptian authorities at their hotel. Baya has since been deported from Egypt , yet Manuel’s whereabouts remain unknown. The Canadian embassy in Cairo has made no statements nor responded to any questions from fellow delegates. This is a direct violation of international law and humanitarian rights.
As a constituent and concerned Canadian, I am urging your office to:
Ensure Manuel Tapiel is located and released.
Immediately intervene to ensure the safety and freedom of movement of Canadian citizens in Egypt.
Strongly oppose any threat of arbitrary detention, harassment, or deportation.
Affirm Canada’s support for the right to peaceful assembly and international solidarity efforts, particularly those aligned with humanitarian principles and international law.
We ask for your prompt and public reassurance that Canada is actively monitoring this situation and taking steps to support and protect our fellow citizens abroad.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this urgent matter.
