Major Milestone in Shelter Relocation
Hyde Park, IL — Under the leadership of Neal McKnight and the organization Hyde Park Neighbors Preserving Community, the Hyde Park community has reached a pivotal milestone in its long-standing advocacy: the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois are moving forward with plans to close and relocate the shelter currently located at 4900 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
The shelter is now in the process of being closed. On June 18, 2025, attorney Neal McKnight submitted a formal legal letter to the Office of the Mayor, outlining key legal issues and chronic community concerns surrounding the shelter’s operations. This decisive action has directly contributed to what is now being unofficially reported: that both the City and State intend to shut down and relocate the shelter.
Although formal confirmation from city or state officials is still pending, Mr. McKnight continues to work closely with both entities to secure a definitive timeline for closure. He is also actively advocating for the inclusion of critical community priorities in the next steps of this transition.
“This is a significant win for Hyde Park residents who have worked tirelessly to ensure their voices are heard,” said Hyde Park Neighbors Preserving Community. “We remain committed to a closure process that reflects the values and needs of our community.”
Hyde Park Neighbors Preserving Community will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available and urges officials to move swiftly and transparently to finalize the process.
