Demand for Immediate Traffic Safety Measures

Location: Voorhies Avenue & East 27th Street, Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY 11235 — District 45

We, the residents of Sheepshead Bay, demand that NYC DOT immediately install a STOP sign and speed camera on Voorhies Avenue at East 27th Street.

Following the fatal crash of May 6, 2026, which left one woman dead and another critically injured, we contacted DOT Brooklyn Commissioner Keith Bray. He assured us that an investigation was underway and that results would be available at the beginning of the 2026 school year.

PS 52 Elementary School is located nearby at East 29th Street and Voorhies Avenue. Hundreds of children and families travel through this area.

East 27th Street is one-way and has a stop sign, while Voorhies Avenue has none. Residents report frequent minor collisions and near-misses involving pedestrians.

Instead of installing a stop sign, DOT installed a 25 MPH speed-limit sign and a No Parking Anytime sign.

Brooklyn Commissioner K.Bray has since referred to the investigation as ongoing and directed residents to 311, which redirects requests back to DOT.

Our demand is clear:

We request immediate implementation of traffic safety measures, written disclosure of the investigation's findings, and a definitive timeline for action.

Our children's safety cannot wait for another tragedy.

Respectfully,

Residents of Sheepshead Bay

Brooklyn, NY 11235
