Dear Vice Chancellor Professor Nic Beech,

We, a group of feminists, community organisers, political activists, and concerned citizens, are writing to respectfully request the reconsideration of the forthcoming concert by the artist Mohsen Namjoo, scheduled to be held on January 21st at the Peel Hall, University of Salford, in Greater Manchester, UK. 

Mohsen Namjoo faces serious allegations of sexual assault and attempted rape, some of which have been meticulously documented as part of the Iranian #MeToo movement. These accusations have understandably caused distress within the Iranian community and beyond. Mohsen Namjoo has been labeled as a misogynistic harasser by numerous figures within the Iranian artistic and academic community and the diaspora due to his hate speech and verbal assaults on gender and religious minorities. Despite his denial of these claims, a disturbing 17-minute audio recording has surfaced in which he is heard making deeply offensive remarks, including minimalizing the trauma of rape survivors  and claiming “ 'No doesn't mean no'”, disparaging the #MeToo movement, and displaying explicit hatred toward a survivor who practices the Baha'i faith as well as homophobic and misogynistic assault on some of the advocates of survivors. 

The #MeToo movement stands as a pivotal platform for survivors of sexual assault and harassment, allowing them a space to voice their traumatic experiences and seek rightful justice. In light of the seriousness of the allegations and the controversy surrounding Mohsen Namjoo's comments, we firmly believe that providing a platform to an individual with such allegations only undermines the safety and comfort of women and other sexual and gender minorities within and beyond the academic community. 

In recognition of Greater Manchester’s feminist history  and University of Salford’s policy of Zero tolerance to Sexual Harresment Policy and Encouragement of Safe space for all we reiterates that sexual harassment violates the standards of the community and is unacceptable, and in furtherance of University of Salford’s commitment to providing locations that are safe and secure from sexual harassment, it is imperative to reconsider the hosting of this concert. Continuing with the event as planned could significantly undermine the university's staunch stance against sexual harassment and its ongoing efforts to maintain a safe environment.

We understand and respect the significance of freedom of expression and artistic pursuits, but we also emphasise the paramount importance of accountability and adherence to the concerns and rights of survivors who have courageously come forward with their stories. Cancelling this event will not only demonstrate solidarity with survivors but also underscore a commitment to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.

We sincerely appreciate your attention to this pressing matter and respectfully urge the university to re-evaluate its decision to host Mohsen Namjoo. It is our heartfelt hope that the decision to cancel the concert will contribute positively to promoting a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone involved.

Appendix:

Specific Incident: On July 14, 2013, in California, after a musical event, Mr. Namjoo made an unsolicited advance toward a woman, identified as "Mahi," under the guise of hospitality. His unwanted and aggressive behaviour culminated in a physical altercation and an immediate expulsion from the residence. Mahi, supported by the host, subsequently filed a police complaint against Namjoo for sexual assault and attempted rape. Iran International's investigative reporters documented this incident and other allegations against Namjoo in May 2021.

Professional Misconduct: In 2014, Mohsen Namjoo tried to leverage his position of power by inviting a co-actor, Bushra, to his hotel room. He attempted to bar her from the project and hinder her artistic pursuits upon her refusal. There have also been instances where Namjoo has sent threatening emails, one of which was addressed to an Iran International program presenter.

Disturbing Remarks: In April 2021, an audio tape surfaced where Namjoo derided his critics and made troubling statements about consent. He suggested that a woman's "no" does not necessarily mean refusal and recounted a personal incident highlighting his coercive behaviour. This audio, lasting seventeen minutes, was riddled with sexist, misogynistic remarks and hate speech.

Recently, a similar petition and demand has been recognised by Northeastern Illinois University leading to the cancellation of Mohsen Namjoo’s concert.

ما، گروهی از فمینیست‌ها، سازماندهندگان جماعت ها، کنشگران سیاسی و شهروندان دغدغه مند، با احترام درخواست می‌کنیم که در برگزاری کنسرت آتی محسن نامجو، در تاریخ ۲۱ ژانویه در دانشگاه سالفورد، تجدید نظر شود.

محسن نامجو با اتهامات جدی ِتعرض جنسی و اقدام به تجاوز روبروست که برخی از آنها در بخشی از فعالیت های جنبش «#من-هم» در ایران مستند شده است. این اتهامات طبیعتاً موجب آزردگی در جامعه ایرانی و فراتر از آن شده است. محسن نامجو به دلیل نفرت پراکنی  و تعرضات کلامی به جنسیت و اقلیت‌های مذهبی توسط بسیاری از چهره‌های جامعه هنری و دانشگاهی ایران و خارج از کشور به عنوان یک آزارگر زن ستیز شناخته شده است. علیرغم رد این ادعاها توسط شخص نامجو، یک فایل صوتی 17 دقیقه‌ای از او در دسترس است که نگرانی ها را افزایش می دهد، این فایل صوتی مملو از سخنان بسیار توهین‌آمیز از جمله تقلیل آسیب روحی راویان تجاوز جنسی و تاکید بر "نه به معنای نه نیست" ، تحقیر جنبش «#من-هم» و ابراز تنفر صریح نسبت به یک راوی بهایی و نیز توهین به گرایش جنسی و جنسیت حامیان و مدافعان .حقوق آسیب دیدگان است

جنبش «#من-هم»  یک پلت فرم محوری برای بازماندگان تجاوز و آزار جنسی است که برای آنها فضایی ایجاد میکند تا روایتگر آسیبهای خود باشند و از این طریق عدالت واقعی را جستجو کنند. با توجه به جدی بودن اتهامات و مناقشات پیرامون اظهارات محسن نامجو، ما قاطعانه معتقدیم که فراهم کردن بستر برای فردی با چنین ادعاهایی، امنیت و آسایش زنان و سایر اقلیت های جنسی و جنسیتی را در داخل و خارج از جامعه دانشگاهی تضعیف می کند.

با توجه به تاریخ مهم مبارزات فمنیستی در منچستر بزرگ  و سیاست عدم رواداری دانشگاه سالفورد در قبال اذیت و آزار جنسی و همچنین تعهد این مجموعه به تامین فضای امن برای همگان، ما تاکید میکنیم  بر اینکه آزار و اذیت جنسی استانداردهای جامعه را نقض می کند و غیرقابل قبول می‌داند و در راستای تعهدات دانشگاه سالفورد خواستار بازنگری در میزبانی و لغو این کنسرت هستیم. برگزاری این برنامه می تواند موضع قاطع دانشگاه  علیه آزار و اذیت جنسی و تلاش های مداوم آن برای حفظ یک محیط امن را بطور جدی تضعیف و مخدوش کند

ما به اهمیت آزادی بیان و فعالیت‌های هنری باور داریم و به آن احترام می‌گذاریم، اما همچنین بر اهمیت مسئولیت‌پذیری و پایبندی به نگرانی‌ها و حقوق بازماندگانی که شجاعانه داستان‌های خود را بیان کرده‌اند، تأکید می‌کنیم. لغو این برنامه نه تنها نشان دهنده همبستگی با بازماندگان است، بلکه بر تعهد به ایجاد یک محیط امن، محترمانه و فراگیر تاکید می کند.

ما صمیمانه از توجه شما به این موضوع سپاسگزاریم و محترمانه از دانشگاه می خواهیم در تصمیم خود برای میزبانی از محسن نامجو تجدید نظر کند. ما از صمیم قلب امیدواریم که لغو این کنسرت قدم مثبتی در ترویج جامعه ای فراگیرتر و حمایت‌کننده‌ برای همه افراد باشد.

 در شب یکشنبه ۱۴ ژوییه  ۲۰۱۳ در ایالت کالیفرنیا، محسن نامجو پس از یک اجرای موسیقی به بهانه خستگی و صرف مشروب تقاضا می‌کند که شب را در خانه‌ی زن جوانی از هوادارانش به سر برد. زن دیگری به نام «ماهی» (اسم مستعار) در آن خانه مهمان بود. آقای نامجو نیمه شب بدون اجازه وارد اتاق خواب ماهی شده و به زور بازوهای ماهی را گرفته، او را به زمین فشار داده، و قصد همخوابی با او را می‌کند. آقای نامجو با دست دهان زن جوان را می‌گیرد و با تهدید به او می‌گوید، «اگر امشب نشه، باز گیرت می‌آرم!» ماهی با فریاد و مقاومت خود را می‌رهاند. میزبان نیز همان شب آقای نامجو را از خانه بیرون می‌کند و به اتفاق «ماهی» شکایتی علیه نامجو در مقر پلیس زیر عنوان تعرض جنسی و اقدام به تجاوز ثبت می‌کنند. محسن نامجو متعاقباً با پیامک خصوصی از ماهی می‌خواهد که موضوع را فراموش کند. در ماه مه ۲۰۲۱، این رویداد در جزییات، همراه با چند مورد مشابه دیگر به وسیله‌ی خبرنگاران تحقیقی شبکه ایران اینترنشنال مستند می‌شود. این شبکه عنوان کرد که بر اساس تحقیقات آنها دست‌کم پنج مورد از آزار جنسی به دست محسن نامجو را مستند کرده است.

در سال ۲۰۱۴، آقای نامجو زن جوان دیگری را به نام بُشرا که قرار بوده در یک فیلم با او بازی کند به اتاق خود در هتل دعوت می‌کند و پس از رد این دعوت از سوی بُشرا، سعی در اخراج این زن از پروژه فیلم و تنگ کردن عرصه فعالیت هنری برای او می‌کند. محسن نامجو با ایمیل‌های تهدیدآمیز و لبریز از نفرت به دوستان سابقش که از او فاصله گرفته‌ و رفتار او را سرزنش کرده‌اند، مدام آنان را آزار می‌دهد. یکی از این ایمیل‌های تهدیدآمیز به مجری برنامه ایران‌اینترنشنال بوده است که از این شبکه پخش شد.

در آوریل ۲۰۲۱ ، یک نوار صوتی از محسن نامجو در فضای مجازی پخش شد که او در جمعی خصوصی به شدت به منتقدان خود حمله کرد و ادعا کرد پاسخ «نه» از سوی یک زن به معنی «نه» نیست! او گفت، «نه به معنی نه نیست، نه در فرهنگ ما می‌تواند هزار معنی بدهد.» سپس با عبارات تحقیرآمیز توصیف کرد که چگونه پس از شنیدن چند ساعت پاسخ منفی برای سکس از سوی زنی از دوستان سابقش، سرانجام با اصرار موفق شده نه را تبدیل به آری کند! او همانجا با خودستایی گفت یک ساعت تنفس او معادل شش ماه زندگیِ حقیر هر کدام از منتقدانش است. این نوار هفده دقیقه‌ای مملو از سخنان سکسیستی، زن‌ستیزانه و ابراز نفرت علیه اقلیت‌های جنسی، توأم با فخرفروشی و حقیر شمردن منتقدان است.

همچنین کارزاری دقیقا مشابه با درخواستی مشابه در دانشگاه نورث ایست ایلینویز در مورد کنسرت مقرر محسن نامجو مورد توجه قرار گرفت و به لغو کنسرت او انجامید.
