Urgent Need for a Crosswalk or Stop Sign in Lincoln Heights, CA

The Issue

On October 22nd, 2022, tragedy struck our community in Lincoln Heights, CA. A motorcyclist lost their life after being hit by an oncoming vehicle at the dangerous intersection between Griffin and Ave 31. Condolences to the family.  This devastating incident shook our neighborhood and left us questioning the safety measures in place.

Unfortunately, this was not the only incident. On August 14th, 2023, another horrifying accident occurred at the same intersection. A pedestrian who was simply scavenging for cans and bottles early in the morning was struck by a speeding car that fled the scene. Miraculously, they survived but were left with severe injuries.

What makes this situation even more alarming is that there is no crosswalk to be found within a significant distance of approximately 800 feet from this hazardous intersection. This lack of proper infrastructure puts countless lives at risk every day.

As concerned members of the Lincoln Heights community, we cannot stand idly by while innocent lives are endangered due to inadequate safety measures. We believe it is time to take action and demand immediate attention from local authorities to address this pressing issue.

According to studies conducted by reputable organizations such as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), well-designed crosswalks can significantly reduce pedestrian accidents and fatalities by providing clear guidance for both drivers and pedestrians alike.

Furthermore, research published in The Journal of Transportation Engineering has shown that implementing stop signs at intersections effectively reduces vehicle speeds and improves overall traffic safety.

We urge city officials and relevant authorities to prioritize public safety by installing either a crosswalk or a stop sign at the dangerous intersection between Griffin Street and Ave 31 in Lincoln Heights without delay. By doing so, we can prevent further tragedies like those that have already occurred here.

How many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken? We cannot afford to wait for more accidents to happen. Let us come together as a community and demand the necessary changes that will protect our loved ones and ensure the safety of all who traverse this intersection.

Sign this petition today and make your voice heard. Together, we can create a safer Lincoln Heights for everyone.

Thank you for your support.
