This petition is for the immediate installation of a crossing guard at the intersection of Orchard and Bridge St, located one block from Somerville High School.

On 10/14/2024, my daughter was hit by a pickup truck while walking to school at this busy intersection. Thankfully, she is recovering, but this incident has brought to light the urgent need for improved safety measures for our children. This is long overdue!

Currently, this intersection lacks a crossing guard, which exposes students to unnecessary risks as they navigate through heavy traffic.  A crossing guard would provide:

• Increased Safety: Ensuring children can cross the street safely.
• Traffic Management: Helping to regulate the flow of vehicles during school hours.
• Peace of Mind: Providing reassurance to parents that their children are safer.

We urge the Somerville Board of Education, City Council, and Police Dept. to take immediate action and assign a crossing guard to this location. Our children deserve to walk to school safely.
