Dear President Dr. Anne M. Kress,

We, a group of concerned members of the Iranian-American community, are writing to respectfully request the urgent cancellation of the forthcoming concert by the Iranian artist Mohsen Namjoo, which is scheduled for the Richard J Ernst Community Cultural Center on November 3, 2024.

Mohsen Namjoo faces serious allegations of sexual assault and attempted rape, several of which have been thoroughly documented as part of the Iranian #MeToo movement. His actions are noted in the U.S. Department of State’s 2021 Iran Human Rights Annual Report and covered by a wide range of international media outlets, including IranWire, BBC Persian, France24,  and London-based Iran International TV. 

These accusations have profoundly affected the Iranian community and beyond, leading to widespread condemnation of Namjoo as a misogynistic harasser by prominent members of the Iranian artistic, academic, and diaspora communities due to his hateful rhetoric and verbal attacks on gender and religious minorities. Despite his denial of the accusations, a disturbing 17-minute audio recording has surfaced, in which he is heard making vile remarks, trivializing the trauma of rape survivors, disparaging the #MeToo movement, and spewing explicit hatred toward a survivor who practices the Baha'i faith.

The #MeToo movement is a crucial platform for survivors of sexual assault and harassment, empowering them to share their experiences and seek justice. In light of the severity of the allegations and Namjoo's inflammatory comments, we firmly believe that allowing him to perform at this event would compromise the safety and well-being of women and marginalized gender communities, both within the academic space and beyond.

Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) has a long-standing position of adopting a zero-tolerance policy toward sexual harassment, which reflects the institution's values. The continuation of this planned event conflicts with NOVA's commitment to maintaining a safe environment free of harassment and discrimination. Additionally, it undermines the College's staunch stance against sexual harassment and its ongoing efforts to maintain a safe environment to protect the community.

While we respect the importance of artistic expression and free speech, accountability and the rights of survivors must take precedence. Canceling this concert would demonstrate support for survivors and reinforce the college's dedication to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. Moreover, it would prevent Namjoo from using his concert as a platform to spread harmful rhetoric against his accusers, further poisoning the atmosphere and turning audiences and communities against these brave women. His public performances thus become not just problematic but harmful to survivors and the broader community.

We sincerely appreciate your attention to this pressing matter and respectfully urge the Northern Virginia Community College to reconsider and cancel the planned performance by Mohsen Namjoo, as this action will affirm the institution’s dedication to safety and inclusion. Given the serious nature of these allegations and the proximity of the scheduled event, we urge the College to take swift and decisive action. We hope canceling the concert will promote a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone involved.

رئیس محترم کالج ویرجینیای شمالی، دکتر آن ام. کرس،

ما، گروهی از اعضای جامعه ایرانیان آمریکا، با احترام خواستار لغو فوری کنسرت آتی هنرمند ایرانی محسن نامجو هستیم که قرار است در مرکز فرهنگی ریچارد جی ارنست در تاریخ ۳ نوامبر ۲۰۲۴ برگزار شود.

محسن نامجو با اتهامات جدی مبنی بر آزار جنسی و اقدام به تجاوز روبرو است که چندین مورد از آنها به عنوان بخشی از جنبش «#من‌ـ‌هم» در ایران به طور کامل مستند شده است. اقدامات او در گزارش سالانه حقوق بشر ایران توسط وزارت امور خارجه ایالات متحده در سال ۲۰۲۱ ذکر شده و توسط طیف گسترده‌ای از رسانه‌های بین‌المللی، از جمله ایران وایر، بی‌بی‌سی فارسی، فرانس24، و تلویزیون ایران اینترنشنال پوشش داده شده است.

این اتهامات عمیقاً جامعه ایرانی و فراتر از آن را تحت تأثیر قرار داده است و منجر به محکومیت گسترده نامجو به عنوان یک آزاردهنده زن ستیز از سوی اعضای برجسته جامعه هنری، دانشگاهی و خارج از کشور به دلیل سخنان تنفرآمیز و تعرضات کلامی به جنسیت و اقلیت‌های مذهبی  شده است. علیرغم رد این ادعاها، یک فایل صوتی ۱۷ دقیقه‌ای نگران‌کننده از سخنان او منتشر شده است که در آن سخنان بسیار توهین‌آمیز از جمله فروکاهیدن ضربه روحی به بازماندگان تجاوز جنسی، تحقیر جنبش «#من‌ـ‌هم» و ابراز تنفر صریح نسبت به یک بازمانده‌ی پیرو آیین بهایی شنیده می‌شود.

جنبش «#من‌ـ‌هم» یک پلت فرم حیاتی برای بازماندگان تجاوز و آزار جنسی است و به آنها قدرت می‌دهد تا تجربیات و تروماهای خود را به اشتراک بگذارند و به دنبال عدالت باشند. با توجه به شدت اتهامات و اظهارات تحریک آمیز نامجو، ما قویاً معتقدیم که اجازه دادن به او برای اجرای این رویداد امنیت و آسایش زنان و جوامع جنسی به حاشیه رانده شده را چه در فضای دانشگاهی و چه فراتر از آن تضعیف می‌کند.

کالج ویرجینیای شمالی موضع دیرینه‌ای در اتخاذ سیاست مدارای صفر در قبال آزار جنسی دارد که منعکس کننده ارزش‌های این موسسه است. ادامه یافتن این رویداد برنامه‌ریزی شده با تعهد کالج برای حفظ یک محیط امن و عاری از آزار و اذیت و تبعیض در تضاد است. علاوه بر این، باعث تضعیف موضع قاطع کالج در برابر آزار و اذیت جنسی و تلاش‌های مداوم آن برای حفظ یک محیط امن برای محافظت از جامعه می‌شود.

ما به اهمیت آزادی بیان و فعالیت‌های هنری باور داریم و به آن احترام می‌گذاریم، اما همچنین بر اهمیت مسئولیت‌پذیری و پایبندی به نگرانی‌ها و حقوق بازماندگانی که شجاعانه داستان‌های خود را بیان کرده‌اند، تأکید می‌کنیم. لغو این برنامه نه تنها نشان‌دهنده همبستگی با بازماندگان است، بلکه بر تعهد به ایجاد یک محیط امن، محترمانه و فراگیر تاکید می‌کند. علاوه بر این، این اقدام مانع از آن می‌شود که نامجو از کنسرت خود به عنوان بستری برای انتشار گفتار مخرب استفاده کند، که فضا را بیشتر مسموم کرده و مخاطبان و جامعه را علیه این زنان شجاع تحریک می‌کند؛ مسئله‌ای که اجراهای عمومی او را مشکل‌ساز، و برای بازماندگان و جامعه مضر می‌سازد.

ما صمیمانه از توجه شما به این موضوع سپاسگزاریم و محترمانه از کالج ویرجینیای شمالی می‌خواهیم در تصمیم خود برای میزبانی از محسن نامجو تجدید نظر کند. با توجه به ماهیت جدی این اتهامات و نزدیکی به رویداد برنامه ریزی شده، ما از کالج می‌خواهیم که اقدامی سریع و قاطع انجام دهد. ما از صمیم قلب امیدواریم که لغو این کنسرت قدم مثبتی در ترویج جامعه‌ای فراگیرتر و حمایت‌کننده‌ برای همه افراد باشد.
