Supporters,
Becquerel Awareness Day is underway and there's still time to call the FDA at 1-888-SAFEFOOD to leave a message for the Commissioner of Human Foods, Kyle Diamantes. Demand that he act on the 2013 FFAN Citizen Petition by lowering the current outrageously high allowable levels for Cesium-137 in food.
FDA is still accepting comments on the petition. If you need help accessing it for any reason please message FFAN0311@gmail.com.
Another petition for signature is here. Don't forget to share both the Change and MoveOn petitions with your networks.
As 4/10 fell on a Friday this year, we're also calling both FDA and representatives next week. Find your reps here, or call the White House switchboard 202-456-1414 to be connected directly to their offices.
One suggestion is to tell them that even U.S. Customs knew that a reading of 68 becquerels per kilogram in shrimp was dangerous. Had it been only up to FDA, that agency would have likely allowed all of the shipments into the US as long as they were below 1,200 Bq/kg, or 18 times more radioactive than what Customs had the good sense to block. Unfortunately, recalls happened because some of the first shrimp contaminated with Cesium-137 passed through Customs prior to triggering radiation alerts during the shrimp recalls from August - February this year. More may be happening but we don't know for sure.
And a final thought: nuclear power plants and war zones obviously don't mix. First it was Ukraine and now Iran. More than ever we need sane, responsible monitoring of our food and an agency that is up to the task. More info to follow about the newly reintroduced Federal Food Administration Act.
Thanks for reading and for making those calls!
Kim
