Urgent Demand for Completion of Flood Mitigation Infrastructure

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Kearny, NJ, urgently demand the completion of the infrastructure improvements necessary to mitigate the frequent and severe flooding in our town.

Background:

  • The Town of Kearny has a long history of flooding during major rain and flood events, causing significant stress and damage to residents' properties.
  • Since 2009, the Town acknowledged the poor state of infrastructure and proposed updates to address these issues in multiple forums, board meetings, and different publicly documented settings.
  • Between 2012-2018, developers were charged fees to participate in a fund designated for these infrastructure improvements.
  • Despite these efforts, the official project to improve the infrastructure only kicked off in April 2021, with an expected completion time of 12 months.

Current Situation:

  • It has been three years since the project started, and it is still incomplete. Meanwhile, Kearny continues to experience severe flooding.
  • The Town has provided no concrete updates explaining the delays or offering an accurate completion date.
  • While other projects have been undertaken and completed, this critical infrastructure project remains neglected.

Our Demands

  • Immediate action to expedite the completion of the flood mitigation project.
  • Regular, transparent updates from the Town regarding the project's progress and expected completion date.
  • Prioritization of safe living conditions for all residents, recognizing that addressing flooding is a fundamental responsibility of the local government.

We believe that safe living conditions are a basic right, and it is the Town's duty to ensure that all residents can live without the constant fear of flooding.

Please join us in demanding that the Town of Kearny complete this essential infrastructure project without further delay.
