The Issue

Black people in the UK are disproportionately affected by mental health difficulties, yet less likely to receive the appropriate care and support. Despite this being a well-documented issue for decades, the inequalities affecting Black people’s mental health have seen little progress. To truly improve mental health for all, the unique needs of Black communities must be prioritised.

The Black Mental Health Manifesto outlines actionable steps to create a fairer society where Black communities can thrive.

We call on the UK Government to swiftly introduce and implement the Race Equality Act and a comprehensive anti-racism strategy to prioritise mental health equity for Black communities. This should include mandatory data collection and reporting by ethnicity, public body action plans, and align with reforms to the Mental Health Act. We also call for the appointment of a Cabinet-level minister to lead the implementation of the Race Equality Act and broader anti-racism initiatives. This role would ensure accountability in addressing structural inequities and eliminating harmful policies, such as the "hostile environment" approach. By doing so, the Government can work toward creating a more inclusive and just society for all.

About us:

The Black Mental Health and Wellbeing Alliance – made up of experts by experience, carers, practitioners, researchers, and representatives from community organisations and national charities – has developed these recommendations in consultation with the Black community and drawing on the latest evidence. We believe that these steps can lead to tangible improvements in Black people’s mental health and wellbeing.

We need your support. Sign this petition to urge the Government to take meaningful action and adopt the proposals outlined in the Black Mental Health Manifesto.
