Urgent Call for SSDI Reform: People with Terminal Diagnoses

Urgent Call for SSDI Reform: People with Terminal Diagnoses
The Issue
My Story: A Race Against Time
I've been diagnosed with Severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension, leading to Severe Right Side Heart Failure. The prognosis is grim: I have only a 10% chance of surviving this year.
The Hidden Flaw in SSDI Regulations
This isn't just about my battle—it's about exposing a critical flaw in the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) system:
- No provisions for terminal cases
- Long processing times + 5-month waiting period
- Result: Many won't live to see benefits
The Stark Reality
- Those with less than a year to live may never receive aid
- Our contributions remain with the government
- Our families are left without support
A Call for Change
In 2019, over 2.8 million people applied for disability benefits. Many faced similar challenges. It's time for change.

I stand before you today, diagnosed with Severe Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension leading to Severe Right Side Heart Failure and leakage in my tricuspid valve. After two difficult years of meeting medical professionals and endless consultations, the prognosis landed like a hammer blow: I have a 10% chance of surviving the year.
My story isn't just about battling a life-threatening disease. It's a story that highlights a disturbing flaw in the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) regulations. Currently, there are no separate provisions for those like me who are contending with the reality of a terminal diagnosis. As it now stands, the time taken for application processing, even when expedited, combined with a subsequent five-month waiting period without benefits, means those with a life expectancy of fewer than a year are unlikely to receive any benefits. This ultimately results in the harsh reality that neither we nor our children stand to benefit, with our contributions ultimately remaining with the government.
According to data from the Social Security Administration, in 2019, over 2.8 million people applied for disability benefits, and many face challenges within this system (source: Social Security Administration, Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability Insurance Program, 2019). It's time we made a difference for those dealing with troubling diagnoses.
I appeal to you all to sign this petition to request the amendment of SSDI rules. If passed, taxpayers with a terminal diagnosis will be treated with fairness and decency in their times of greatest need. Will you stand with us on initiating this change in policy? Please sign and share this petition. The difference, for so many among us, could be immeasurable.
