📢 Urgent Call for Repatriation and Voluntary Return of Ma'di Mothers, Children and Paiyaa

Subject: Urgent Call for the Dignified Repatriation and Voluntary Return of Ma'di Mothers and Children, Relatives, and Paiyaa from Refugee Camps to their Homeland—Including a Call for a Worldwide Fundraising Meeting
We, the undersigned members and friends of the Ma'di community, respectfully submit this urgent petition to the leadership of the Ma'di Community Worldwide, headed by Daru, Lopirigo.
Our hearts ache for our mothers, fathers, children, relatives, and those we call Paiyaa (friends/fellow community members) who continue to endure life in refugee camps. Their protracted displacement is a deep wound upon our collective spirit and a relentless drain on their resilience. While in exile, they face hardship, uncertainty, and the indignity of relying on external aid, cut off from their ancestral lands and the resources needed for a full and independent life.
It is our profound desire and solemn demand that immediate, concrete action be taken to facilitate the safe, voluntary, and dignified return of all displaced Ma'di people to their homes in South Sudan. This repatriation must be part of a well-planned and secure process that ensures safety, restores access to land and livelihoods, and provides basic services like education, healthcare, and water upon return.
Action Through Political Influence: Engaging a Daughter of Ma'di
To secure this vital objective, we call upon the leadership to actively engage and influence key national figures:
H.E. Josephine Lagu Yanga – Daughter of Ma'di and National Figure of Influence
We recognize Her Excellency Josephine Lagu Yanga, Vice President for the Services Cluster, as a distinguished daughter of the Ma'di community who currently holds a national platform of immense power and influence. H.E. Lagu Yanga has recently addressed the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where she is in a position to advocate for South Sudan’s stability, peace, and humanitarian priorities on the world stage.
We urge the Ma'di Community Worldwide to formally call upon H.E. Josephine Lagu Yanga to use her considerable authority and position, especially within the context of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, to directly influence H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit and the relevant government bodies. This action is critical before any potential changes in her official role, as her current status as a Vice President gives her the highest level of access to ensure our people's safe return is prioritized in national policy and security arrangements.
Specifically, we ask H.E. Lagu Yanga to:
Champion the cause of the Ma'di refugees' repatriation at the highest levels of the South Sudanese government.
Ensure that security guarantees and civilian protection mechanisms are firmly established in Ma'di areas of return, including in Magwi County.
Advocate for resource allocation to support repatriation logistics, infrastructure, and livelihood programs for the returnees.
The stabilization and demilitarization of Ma'di lands.
Assurance of land rights and property return for displaced families.
Investment in infrastructure and livelihood programs for reintegration.
And full involvement of Ma'di voices in the peacebuilding and reconciliation processes.
Action Through Community Mobilization: A Worldwide Fundraising Meeting.
Political advocacy must be matched by community action. The massive and complex undertaking of repatriating our people and rebuilding their lives requires substantial, immediate financial backing that cannot wait for international donors alone.
We call upon the Daru, Lopirigo, to convene a Worldwide Meeting for all Ma'di communities in the diaspora and at home, including groups in the US, Uganda, and beyond. The sole and urgent purpose of this gathering must be to fundraise and generate a powerful financial contribution to support the repatriation efforts.
This community fundraising initiative will demonstrate:
Self-Reliance: That the Ma'di people are fully committed to securing the future of their own.
Solidarity: A unified message of support for our mothers, fathers, children, relatives, and paiyaa in the camps.
Practical Support: Funds are needed for critical initial support such as transport, emergency shelter materials, seeds, tools, and start-up supplies to enable self-sufficiency upon return.
The time for our people to return home is now. Their continued displacement must not be allowed to become a permanent state. We trust that the Paldore Daru, Lopirigo will leverage every possible avenue, including the influential position of our daughter, H.E. Josephine Lagu Yanga, and the unified financial might of our worldwide community, to secure the future our people deserve—one of peace, stability, and dignity in their own land.
For God and Country, and for the Ma'di People.
