Thank you, everyone, for dedicating your time, energy, making phone calls, sharing information, and making the effort to join us tonight.
The council members unanimously agreed that this situation needs to be reviewed, and there needs to be more communication with our community. Our councillors expressed their own concerns about how this issue has been handled, the discrepancies in information provided to them compared to what actually happened, and the resulting deep anxiety and mistrust.
The staff, including operations, in my opinion, did a fantastic job of avoiding direct answers to council members' questions and downplaying the severity of the situation. It's important to note that the staff are separate from the council members and the Mayor.
However, the Mayor apologised to our communities for how this matter was handled and assured us that community engagement would occur. She, along with other councillors, emphasised the importance of having quotes readily available to us and an understanding of the process moving forward. We will have to wait and see if, how, and when this will happen. I sincerely hope they will come to meet with us, listen to our concerns, and handle this process correctly.
So, what do we do from here? Here are some suggestions:
- Decide for yourself what will work best for you and your family as these quotes come through.
- I will continue to lobby for the council to take charge of our pump-out services. My motivation for this is based on the NSW state government guidelines for efficient removal of effluent pump-out services, which highlights the public health and environmental impacts on residents when the council steps away, as witnessed in Port Stephens. In other words, I don't believe residents should be responsible for this.
- Share this petition. We need it to reach 500 signatures to be considered by the senate and addressed on a larger scale. It's currently just over 300 signatures. Please message your family and friends and encourage them to sign.
- Keep engaging with our council members and the operations team at LMCC. They are supposed to have the answers, and we have every right to ask the questions.
Also, take care of yourself. Reach out if you need anything and prioritize self-care. We achieved a victory tonight, which is amazing. There may be more challenges ahead, but we will face them as they come. I'm proud of our team for tonight's win! Go team.
