Urgent Appeal: Release Mamoun Idris Habbani

Urgent Appeal: Release Mamoun Idris Habbani

The Issue

Updates May 04/ 2026:

On May 03/ 2026, the Court of Appeal in White Nile State, sitting in the city of Kosti, upheld the conviction and judgment. Although the verdict was originally issued by the court on February 23, 2026, defense lawyer was not notified until May 03/2026, approximately more than two months later. Meanwhile, the accused has remained in custody since July 2025.

Mr. Mamoun Idris Habbani, a respected tribal leader residing in Wad Nimer, western White Nile, SUDAN, is widely admired for his wisdom, integrity, and lifelong dedication to serving his community, including the people of Wad Nimer, Al-Sufi, and Um Rimtta. Even during the most challenging and dangerous periods, he has remained committed to the welfare of his people.

Despite his respected status, Mr. Habbani has been the target of repeated persecution. He was abducted by the Rapid Support Forces and held hostage, only released after a ransom was paid following the looting of his home and personal belongings. Subsequently, he endured a systematic campaign of harassment by local units of the Islamic Movement, fueled by long-standing hostilities and a misleading media campaign targeting his family. On 11 July 2025, authorities arrested him and placed him in Al-Diwaim city Prison.

In a deeply alarming development, on 26 November 2025, AT AGE 70+, Al-Diwaim Court sentenced Mr. Habbani to death, accusing him of “collaborating with the Rapid Support Forces.” These baseless and unjust charges are deeply flawed, lacking credible evidence, and fail to meet the most basic standards of justice, fairness and dignity. Mr. Habbani is over seventy years old, making this sentence particularly cruel, injustice and inhumane.

This case raises serious concerns about human rights, the rule of law, and the protection of elders and tribal leaders in Sudan. We call on the international community, human rights organizations, and relevant authorities to:

 • Condemn the unjust charges and fabricated accusations

 • Demand a fair, transparent, and impartial judicial review

 • Immediately release Mr. Mamoun Idris Habbani

Justice, fairness, and respect for human dignity must prevail.
