Dear Honorable Ministers and Respected Authorities,

We, the undersigned, are a coalition of wildlife advocates, conservationists, tourists and concerned global citizens, collectively raising our voice for the welfare of animals in Seychelles. 

Many tourists report to us the bad conditions of animals in the Seychelles, especially Aldabra Giant Tortoises and dogs.

📍Aldabra Giant Tortoises are often confined to small, inadequate spaces, especially those held in captivity for tourism purposes or in private houses.

Aldabra Giant Tortoises are kept in suboptimal conditions by resorts and private entities, solely for tourist attraction.

In La Digue some local guides allows tourists to go into the fence with turtles. Some local guides allows tourists to ride tortoises even if it's forbidden. Despite the signs, there is no control by the goverment and the local guides are not trained to respect animals.

In Curieuse island, despite the signs, the lunch area is always with loud music. Some local operators seems really do not understand what is a natural reserve. Tourists pay to go inside a natural reserve, not a party.

The plight of Aldabra Giant Tortoises, confined to small, inadequate spaces, devoid of their natural habitat's richness, is a matter of grave concern. Such conditions are detrimental to their health, well-being, and natural behavior. We urge the government and relevant authorities to take immediate and effective measures to rectify this situation.

📍Dogs are often live closed in cages in private houses. Although the seychellois law itself clearly says that dog owners can not keep the dog in cage, there is no control by the local authorities and it is a very widespread practice in many local families.

The phenomenon of strays is widespread and there is no sterilization project to limit it. Many dogs are sick and abandoned without any care,  although the seychellois law itself clearly says that dog owners who do not take care of their dogs can be fined. 

Some years ago the plan was to lock strays dogs in a kennel and proceed with euthanasia after a week if no one claimed the animal. Sterilization is the only solution.

📍Fruit bats are sometimes locked in cages as a tourist attraction and prevented from flying from birth.

All this not only undermines the ecological integrity of these creatures, but also tarnishes the image of Seychelles as a leader in ethical and sustainable tourism.

The Seychelles, a nation celebrated for its commitment to environmental protection and a haven for unique biodiversity, can not promote sustainable tourism without any animal welfare regulations. 

Our petition calls for the following actions:

• Strict Regulation of Aldabra Giant Tortoises Enclosures in hotels and private houses: Implement stringent guidelines for resorts, private owners and local guides, who display Aldabra Giant Tortoises for tourism purposes. These guidelines should mandate adequate space and natural habitat conditions. Actually there are really small fences with an inappropriate number of tortoises.
• Regular Inspections and Licensing: Establish a system of regular inspections and mandatory licensing for all establishments and private houses keeping Aldabra Giant Tortoises. These inspections should ensure adherence to the highest standards of animal welfare and habitat maintenance.
• Strict regulations for the welfare of dogs, banning dog cages, where they are kept 24 hours a day by local families. Dogs should have a fence that allows room for movement. Keeping them in cages 24 hours a day is cruelty and this is recognized by your law, law which, however, is not enforced with regular checks and fines.
• Education and Awareness Campaigns: Develop and promote educational campaigns aimed at tourists, locals and local businesses, highlighting the importance of ethical wildlife tourism and the proper treatment of Aldabra Giant Tortoises.
• Curieuse Marine National Park: Tourists willingly pay taxes to enter the reserves, if this money is used for the conservation of the place.  The amount of waste and the loud music in the barbecue areas are absolutely out of place in a natural park. 
• Local Guides Involvement and Education: it's necessary to provide education on the ecological importance of Aldabra Giant Tortoises and training on how to care for them responsibly.
• More control from the goverment for ecological activities: currently there is no government control over the behavior of local guides and nature reserve. 
• Promotion of Ethical Tourism: Advocate for tourism that respects wildlife, encouraging local guides and tourists to visit natural habitats  rather than viewing captive animals in artificial settings. 

By implementing these measures, we believe that Seychelles can enhance the welfare of captive Aldabra Giant Tortoises and other animals, reinforce its reputation as a destination that values and upholds the principles of ethical tourism and environmental conservation.

We urge you to address this issue with the urgency and seriousness it deserves and to take concrete steps to ensure the humane and respectful treatment of animals in Seychelles.

Cari Onorevoli Ministri e rispettate Autorità,

siamo una coalizione di difensori della fauna selvatica, ambientalisti, turisti e cittadini globali preoccupati, che alzano collettivamente la loro voce per il benessere degli animali alle Seychelles. 

Molti turisti ci segnalano le pessime condizioni degli animali alle Seychelles, in particolare dei cani e delle tartarughe giganti di Aldabra.

📍I cani sono spesso chiusi in gabbie nelle case private, il fenomeno del randagismo è diffuso e non esiste un progetto di sterilizzazione per limitarlo.

📍I pipistrelli della frutta vengono spesso rinchiusi in gabbie come attrazione turistica e gli viene impedito di volare fin dalla nascita.

📍Le tartarughe giganti di Aldabra sono spesso confinate in spazi piccoli e inadeguati, soprattutto quelle tenute in cattività per scopi turistici negli alberghi o in case private, senza garantire loro uno spazio di movimento adeguato alla loro specie.

📍Alcune guide locali permettono e incitano i turisti a cavalcare le tartarughe giganti e ad entrare nei recinti, nonostante i cartelli lo vietino.

📍Non c'è alcun controllo da parte del governo sulle attività degli operatori/guide locali e su come vengono gestite le riserve naturali.

📍A Curieuse, che dovrebbe essere una riserva naturale, c'è sempre musica alta nelle aree barbecue. 

La difficile situazione delle tartarughe giganti di Aldabra, confinate in spazi piccoli e inadeguati, prive della ricchezza del loro habitat naturale, è motivo di grave preoccupazione. Tali condizioni sono dannose per la loro salute, il loro benessere e il loro comportamento naturale. Esortiamo il governo e le autorità competenti ad adottare misure immediate ed efficaci per porre rimedio a questa situazione.

Tutto ciò non solo mina l’integrità ecologica di queste creature, ma offusca anche l’immagine delle Seychelles come leader nel turismo etico e sostenibile.

Le Seychelles, una nazione celebrata per il suo impegno nella protezione dell’ambiente e un paradiso per una biodiversità unica, non possono promuovere il turismo sostenibile senza alcuna regolamentazione sul benessere degli animali. 

La nostra petizione richiede le seguenti azioni:

• Rigorosa regolamentazione dei recinti delle tartarughe giganti di Aldabra negli hotel e nelle case private: attuare linee guida rigorose per i resort e i proprietari privati ​​che espongono le tartarughe giganti di Aldabra a fini turistici. Queste linee guida dovrebbero imporre condizioni di spazio e habitat naturali adeguati. In realtà ci sono recinti davvero piccoli con un numero inappropriato di tartarughe.
• Ispezioni regolari e licenze: stabilire un sistema di ispezioni regolari e licenze obbligatorie per tutti gli stabilimenti e le case private che detengono le tartarughe giganti di Aldabra. Tali ispezioni dovrebbero garantire il rispetto dei più elevati standard di benessere degli animali e di mantenimento dell’habitat.
• Norme severe per il benessere dei cani: divieto delle gabbie per cani, dove vengono tenuti 24 ore su 24 dalle famiglie locali. I cani dovrebbero avere una recinzione che consenta spazio di movimento. Tenerli in gabbia 24 ore su 24 è una crudeltà riconosciuta dalla stessa legge seychellese, che però non viene applicata con regolari controlli e multe. 
• Campagne di educazione e sensibilizzazione: sviluppare e promuovere campagne educative rivolte alle guide locali e alle imprese locali, sottolineando l'importanza del turismo etico della fauna selvatica e del trattamento adeguato delle tartarughe giganti di Aldabra.
• Curieuse Marine National Park: I turisti pagano volentieri le tasse per entrare nelle riserve, se questo denaro viene utilizzato per la conservazione del luogo. La quantità di rifiuti e la musica ad alto volume nelle aree barbecue sono assolutamente fuori luogo in un parco naturale.
• Coinvolgimento della comunità: incoraggiare l'impegno della comunità locale negli sforzi di conservazione, fornendo istruzione sull'importanza ecologica delle tartarughe giganti di Aldabra e formazione su come prendersi cura di loro in modo responsabile.
• Promozione del turismo etico: sostenere un turismo che rispetti la fauna selvatica, incoraggiando i turisti a visitare gli habitat naturali in condizioni guidate e controllate piuttosto che osservare animali in cattività in ambienti artificiali.

Implementando queste misure, crediamo che le Seychelles possano migliorare il benessere delle tartarughe giganti di Aldabra in cattività e di altri animali, rafforzando la loro reputazione come destinazione che valorizza e sostiene i principi del turismo etico e della conservazione ambientale.

Vi esortiamo ad affrontare questo problema con l’urgenza e la serietà che merita e ad adottare misure concrete per garantire il trattamento rispettoso degli animali alle Seychelles.
