Today, Maryam’s Family Caught the Rats Entering Her Shelter

Maryam’s family managed to catch some of the rats that have been entering the place where she is staying.

For most families, this would be horrifying. For Maryam, it is also dangerous.

She is severely immunocompromised and already struggling with significant swelling and ongoing illness. The presence of rodents around the place where she sleeps creates yet another infection risk for a child whose body has very little ability to protect itself.

Her family are doing everything they can with what they have: keeping her space clean, fighting off rodents, finding medication, paying for private medical care when it is available, and watching closely as her condition changes.

Catching the rats today was a victory, but it also shows the reality Maryam is living in.

She should be recovering somewhere clean and safe, with reliable access to doctors, medication and treatment. Instead, her family are having to fight for the most basic conditions while caring for a critically vulnerable child.
