Last December we stopped the imminent deportation of gay asylum seeker Jimmy Kyesswa to Uganda. Over 33,000 people signed the petition and he was released from detention. Since then the Home Office have been providing Jimmy with shared accommodation and £35.39 per week for living expenses on a payment card (no cash) under Section 4 of the Immigration & Asylum Act 1999. Jimmy and a number of his supporters attended the Manchester Civil Justice Centre today, where his barrister successfully argued that the Home Office decision (not to believe that Jimmy was a gay man and therefore it was safe to return him to Uganda) was incorrect. The case will proceed to a full Judicial Review hearing or possibly another hearing at the First Tier Tribunal.
