Urgent Call to Support Those Battling Long Covid! #LongCovidSupport #TakeActionNow

The Issue

This is a call to action! The United States White House and 100 State Senators, UK British government Rishi Sunak', Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and public health city entities are responsible for the lack of accountability to the public. We need accountability! There are hundreds of thousands that have been affected by Long Covid and multiple health issue. Additional long term disability compensation is needed to support our daily needs. We suffer from conditions that are disabling mentally and physically. We need services and healthcare that targets public health funding which has always been a short-term plan and we know that this does not work on long-term services. We need consistent funding that will support the populations in need at all times. Medical professionals also need to seek training and be knowledgeable and ready to guide and treat patients that are suffering from Long covid regardless of the textbook diagnosis.

Long Covid, also referred to as Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), is a debilitating condition that afflicts individuals who have recuperated from the initial symptoms of COVID-19. This condition can profoundly impact the quality of life for those it ensnares. It is characterized by the persistence or emergence of new symptoms three months after the initial SARS-CoV-2 infection, with these symptoms enduring for a minimum of two months to several years without any other plausible explanation.

We, concerned citizens and supporters of those afflicted by Long Covid, beseech governments, healthcare providers, and research institutions worldwide to take immediate action in addressing this pressing public health crisis. The ensuing facts and statistics underscore the gravity and urgency of our plea:

Prevalence: Recent studies, conducted by esteemed medical journals like The Lancet and JAMA Network Open, estimate that up to 30% of individuals who contract COVID-19 endure long-term symptoms. This translates to millions of people worldwide grappling with Long Covid.

Symptom Severity: Long Covid manifests in diverse ways, including extreme fatigue, cognitive impairment or "brain fog," shortness of breath, chest pain, joint inflammation, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and cognitive dysfunction. Over 200 distinct symptoms have been reported, profoundly affecting daily functioning.

Economic Impact: The enduring consequences of Long Covid transcend personal suffering; they also wield substantial economic ramifications. A study published in Nature approximates that the global cost attributed to lost productivity due to Long Covid could escalate into trillions over time if appropriate support measures are not promptly instituted.

Lack of Recognition & Support: Despite its ubiquity and devastating global impact, Long Covid remains insufficiently recognized as a distinct medical condition necessitating specialized care and support systems. Many sufferers encounter skepticism from healthcare professionals concerning their persistent symptoms. Studies reveal that approximately 10-20% of SARS-CoV-2-infected individuals may develop symptoms diagnosable as Long Covid. Though precise statistics regarding those living with this condition remain uncertain, it is estimated that over 17 million people within the WHO European Region may have experienced it during the initial two years of the pandemic (2020/21).

Research & Treatment Gap: While some strides have been made in comprehending Long Covid, much remains unknown regarding its origins, risk factors, and effective treatments. Governments and research institutions must allocate greater resources towards comprehensive investigations to formulate evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of Long Covid.

We implore governments worldwide to:

  1. Recognize Long Covid as a distinct medical condition and establish appropriate support systems for affected individuals.
  2. Allocate funding for research into the causes, risk factors, and effective treatments of Long Covid.
  3. Develop comprehensive guidelines for healthcare professionals pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment, and management of Long Covid.
  4. Institute specialized clinics or centers devoted to offering multidisciplinary care for Long Covid sufferers.
  5. Ensure access to affordable healthcare services that cater to the specific needs of individuals grappling with long-term COVID-19 symptoms.

By endorsing this petition, we unite in solidarity with all those grappling with Long Covid. We implore governments across the globe to take swift action in acknowledging the gravity of this condition and apportioning the necessary resources for research, support system development, and accessible healthcare services.

Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of the countless individuals enduring the enduring effects of COVID-19.
